Xbox 360 Tops 28 Million Consoles Sold Worldwide, Microsoft Claims 8M Lead Over PlayStation 3

The Xbox 360 has sold over 28 million units worldwide since its 2005 launch, manufacturer Microsoft announced today.

The Xbox 360's lead over Sony's rival PlayStation 3 hardware now exceeds 8 million units, the company claims, with the Xbox 360 outselling the PS3 in Europe by over 1 million. Microsoft's wording suggests the PlayStation 3 has now sold around 20 million units worldwide--in October, Sony revealed the the PS3 was then nearing 17 million.

Before the holiday season kicked off, Nintendo's Wii had sold 34.55 million units.

Microsoft also boasted the latest figures for Xbox Live, stating that the online service now has 17 million active members, recently hit a new record with 1.5 million users online concurrently, and has accumulated over $1 billion in revenue since November 2005.

Not bad for Sony really. For being almost double the price of a 360 for awhile, and now $100 more along with the 360's 1 year head start the PS3 is doing well.

Yeah, not too bad at all.

It's certainly doing better than one might perceive from comments on the internet

Yea, I was under the impression it had sold about half the number of Xbox 360s but the difference really isn't that substantial. If they'd made it easier to develop for by using a more standard processor (and thus avoiding all the cancellations) it would probably have done much better. Of course the 360 might be doing better if it wasn't so unreliable.

In many respects this has been the worst generations of consoles ever (especially with the utterly abysmal Wii) but hopefully Sony and Microsoft will learn from their mistakes for the next generation.

"not bad" I think you're forgetting that Microsoft was the red headed stepchild of the console industry for a while there. Sony was the juggernaut with their PS1+2

Yes, I understand that, that is why they really are not doing that bad. The PS2 was not nearly as expensive as the PS3 at launch, and the support was not nearly as bad. Also, the PS2 did not have much competition, the Gamecube failed and the Xbox was late to the party. Given the many shots in the foot that Sony gave themselves, not bad.

both the ps1 and ps2 took off from 20 mil to 100 mil after the console was $199

In the US, the PS3 is doing pitiful. It's the European countries that are buying it. Also, Sony still takes a loss on every PS3 sold.

No, the gap between your sphincter.

The gap between PS3 and 360 sales is also wider now than it was one year ago.

Yeah but combine the income that MS gets from XBL, the high cost of producing PS3s, and the 360s much higher attach rate and Sony is getting pummeled. Still, I thought as far as hardware was concerned that the 360 would be doing atleast twice as many sales as the PS3 so this is a little surprising.

dont forget that sony is still selling the ps2 and making a killing off of each one

I didn't how that was so surprising, the PS2 was an immense success when it comes to consoles. Games are still being made for it (Rock Band 2, Madden, Persona 4) on top of the fact that it's a last gen console.

A lot of people still own PS2's and they still get sold. can't argue with the price and the library (1600+ games last I checked on Gamefly).

I dont know how they got that, because while i do have a ps2, I sure as hell haven't touched it in 6 months and i know alot of ppl that haven't either.
Plus nobody never asked me if I played it or not, so those statistics are pulled from somebodies ass for all i care

People buy the PS3 as a bluray player too. The attach rate for games is pretty bad compared to the 360.

the games attach rate is very very good for the 360, but could be very bad as that means its not appealing to the nonhardcore gaming crowd
