This seems to be a popular (failing) trend in MMO's as of late.
Tabula Rasa is a perfect example of this trend. Throughout the entire development of that game I was still asking myself what is the actual GAME, the point of it all, what is the underlying gameplay mechanic?
A lot of the more recent MMO's follow this 'Rasa' trend as I call it.....
Developers create a 3D world, characters, make a few 'quests' ... and BAM you have an MMO?
ummm No... Like any game, it needs a point...... and it needs to be designed from the ground up with that point always in focus.
EQ - Point is Questing/Social
WoW - Point is Questing
PlanetSide - Point is PvP
DAoC - Point is Questing and PvP
War - Point is Questing and PvP
Second Life - Point Social
SWG - Point None = Fail
Tabula Rasa - Point None = Fail
Conan - Point None = Fail (well in this case the point was suppose to be PvP, but failed)
What the hell is the point of this game?
Is there going to be an epic PvP War going on?
Is this going to be Quest oriented? And seriously think it can compete against WoW? (Although I hate it, it is the #1 Questing MMO)
Is it just a big 3D Social Network?
What is the underlying gameplay mechanic?!?
Does the company even have a clue?
Its great and all that you can make 3D Models from a popular movie series, but woop-de-fuckin-do...
