Job Recruiters Avoiding World of Warcraft Players
by Chris Faylor, Dec 16, 2008 1:18pm PSTWhile some studies have found that players of massively multiplayer games are instilled with business leadership skills, some job recruiters are allegedly being told to avoid recommending players of Blizzard's ultra-successful MMO World of Warcraft.
After meeting with one such recruiter, f13.net forumite Tale relayed his experience:
He replied that employers specifically instruct him not to send them World of Warcraft players. He said there is a belief that WoW players cannot give 100% because their focus is elsewhere, their sleeping patterns are often not great, etc. I mentioned that some people have written about MMOG leadership experience as a career positive or a way to learn project management skills, and he shook his head. He has been specifically asked to avoid WoW players.
The recruiter in question was apparently working within the "online media industry," though no details were mentioned as to which employers he works with.
In the past, some have felt so strongly about the benefits of MMO experience that they've suggested players list that experience on a resume for applicable companies.

This is no different than companies preferring prior service military personnel because they view them to be more disciplined and can deal with stress and time management.

When we look at resumes and cover letters and there's no mention of their love for games, we will almost immediately throw it away. Go figure.

recruiters have no clue what they are doing or what they are dealing with, I avoid them as much as I possibly can.
I see his point though, my friends that play WoW are so frustrating to get to do anything in the evening. I can't count the number of times I've been told "I'm raiding" as an excuse. This whole thing is just karmic.
Also a belief that WoW players cannot give 100% focus. The hell, at all my previous jobs there were tons of people that couldn't hold a conversation about work related issues w/o veering the subject off work and bringing up what they did the other night, or other chatty pointless bullshit.

I would say that makes a huge difference, but I don't play this game so I wouldn't know.
How out of touch are you if you think that WOW is a good thing to list on your resume?
Maybe if you were applying for a job moderating some website, or working in the game industry, but otherwise, that's just tomfoolery.
