Report: PSP 2 Games Already In Development
by Nick Breckon, Dec 16, 2008 11:23am PSTSony will release a new version of its PSP handheld next year, with the true successor to the hardware coming later, according to a Eurogamer report.
While release of the PSP follow-up seems a ways off, sources told Eurogamer that publishers are already working on games for the PSP 2.
The report runs contrary to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves' recent statement that Sony has "no plans for a PSP 2."
"I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it--I think they have their hands full at the moment," said Reeves. "We just launched the PSP-3000 so we are still focused on this generation of the platform."

Aside from some button layout complaints and long load times, I really can't fault the PSP. More quality games is always a plus, but I'm not hurting for things to play on it.
The only truly compelling reason I can think of for a successor so soon, with so little competition (horsepower-wise), is to thwart pirates... Either that, or the iPhone is really poised to take over the high-end mobile gaming sector.

I mean they originally priced themselves so high that without the quality games, who would want to shell out $200-250 for this thing? They didn't even really compete with the DS. They competed with Apple more than anything. And now that Apple has launched their brilliant online distribution store for their Iphone/touch, PSP is going to be the one that loses out the most.
Sony needs to rethink their model. Try to reduce costs of a new model, keep the price relatively low, and improve the online distribution of content to compete in today's market.

I have a r4'd DS and a modded PSP so I can have all my games with me on the go. The terrible thing about the PSP though is the experience is a lot better when using PSP games stored on the device.
