Myst Online Going Open Source, Confirms Developer
by Nick Breckon, Dec 15, 2008 4:30pm PSTMyst Online: URU Live developer Cyan Worlds has confirmed that the online game will soon become an open source title, allowing users to freely modify the game's assets and run their own servers.
"Cyan has decided to give make MystOnline available to the fans by releasing the source code for the servers, client and tools for MystOnline as an open source project," said Cyan CEO Tony Fryman to TXT. "We will also host a data server with the data for MystOnline."
Fryman noted that the open source release will rolled out in stages, but that the process should begin shortly. Cyan will continue to run a single free server of the original game.
"This is a bit scary for Cyan because this is an area that we have never gone before, to let a product freely roam in the wild," added Fryman. "But we've poured so much into UruLive, and it has touched so many, that we could not just let it whither and die."

I REALLY hope they get back up on their feet, but this makes it sound like they have blown through every bit of capital that they have had. Working for Cyan Worlds was a dream job as a kid. I hope they can find more work soon.
i absolutely loved the original myst. it was the sole reason i bought my first pc. in fact i knew i wanted the game so badly after trying it that i bought the game before i bought my pc :)
my interest wained during riven as I didn't have the same determination to continue playing. i look forward to trying this open source version though.
