First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 15, 2008 3:37am PSTGood morning! I'm guessing this will be a pretty uneventful week, as we creep closer towards the holidays and end of the year. At least there's still plenty of games to keep us entertained right? I actually temporarily find myself back in 2007, as I've finally been playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Fantastic piece of gaming so far.
Every year all of us get sent various Christmas cards and packages, and one such card I received this year was from the guys at Splash Damage. I'm only mentioning this because every mention nets the Baird's Tapir Project a donation from the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars developer, and so I'm happy to help the cause.

I shot all of this by myself, no grading was done and only available light used.
From 1920x1080@40MB/s source to 1280x720@1.7MB/s Vimeo flash format and it still looks amazing. I need a better paid job...

Headphones Wearing X-Fi using Shackers!
I just improved my sound quality 100% by fixing my configuration and wanted to share.
I never used CMSS-3D before because there is so much bad information out there about how to correctly set it up. Some guys say to set everything to headphones and when I do it sounds like absolute shit. I did what this guy did below (making sure to unlink the creative driver setting from windows) and it sounds amazing!

I used the settings in this thread and it made a HUGE difference in sound quality. There are a bunch of guys arguing about these settings but I can tell you playing Left 4 Dead is completely different now. Its really quite amazing.
Make sure you use the CMSS-3D for headphones, not the one for 2/2.1. They don't do the same thing.
Holy shit I can't believe Ive been missing out all this time.

I have a big bunch of data that my program needs to process by comparing all items to all other items, a glorious n-squared waste of CPU time. I am parallelizing the code to take advantage of our quad-core workstations; this makes it run much faster overall. I am splitting up the data by dividing the total number of items by the number of threads and assigning a sequential range of indices to each thread. However, I am running into the problem that there are natural "faster" and "slower" segments of the data, like items 1-25 will run much faster than items 26-50, for example, making thread #1 end much sooner than thread #2, which leads to non-optimal use of CPU resources toward the end of the routine.
Is there a better way to split up the data among the processing threads that will avoid one thread "running out" of data to process long before the others finish?
I've actually already solved my problem but I'm still posting this because I don't think my solution would work for some kinds of data sets.

After watching the play, I dont understand how its even a question. As he caught the ball, both feet dragged in the end zone. It does not matter that he fell in the opposite direction (on the playing field). Touchdown, play is over!

Noooo, doggie, get your OWN enormous ox skull!
Been having fun even though there's only maybe 1 person in the shack kinship that's around my level, and I only saw him once (on accident) :( But grouping with lower level guys and helping them out is still fun.

Does anyone have a link or know of what type of encoding and settings I should use to optimize for HD playback on youtubes?
Right now I am using the H.264 codec into an MP-4. with the 1260 HD resolution, I am also doing a multipass or some shit because it says better quality.
Anyone have any pointers or websites with pointers?

I'm looking for a phone that does:
- Most importantly, ease of writing. The user is coming from a palm device and loves to handwrite/graffiti and draw with a stylus.
- Run multiple programs at once, or at least switch between without losing your place (in the document/contact list etc)
- Cut/Copy/Paste between programs/documents.
- A decent Camera (doesn't have to be 5mp or anything)
- Audio recording ability
- Can be used as an MP3 player
- Large Screen (vital)
- Would like to be able to use the pda functionality while talking on the phone (take notes etc)
- Decent internet browsing capabilities
- Wifi a plus.
So... My HTC P4000/Mogul does all of this stuff, but WM6 isn't the most user friendly system. How does an iPhone stack up? Obviously for multimedia stuff it's the bees knees, but this person will use the thing more for writing/reading/taking notes etc. How about the Blackberry Curve? How is it at multimedia stuff (photos/audio/video)?
Size/weight of the phone doesn't matter at all.
Suggestions?

If you know of any other place I can download this game for $10 let me know... At that price It's a steal from what I've heard of the expansion, plus you don't even need the original SupCom to play it!
