Metal Gear Solid Theme Removed from MGS 4 Due to Plagiarism Charges
by Nick Breckon, Dec 12, 2008 2:20pm PSTMetal Gear Solid composer Norihiko Hibino now says that the series' classic theme song was removed from Metal Gear Solid 4 due to plagiarism accusations.
"The truth is, Konami [had legal problems with] Russian composers who said we stole their music," Hibino told EGM, as related by Gamasutra. "They didn't, actually. But Konami was too sensitive about the situation and just decided not to use that music in the game."
The unnamed Russian composers apparently allege that the theme was stolen from Russian composer Georgy Sviridov's concerto "Pushkin's Garland" from 1979.
The Metal Gear Solid theme is credited to composer Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase, and first debuted with the PlayStation release of Metal Gear Solid in 1998.
Below the fold is a video of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima essentially getting "Das Punked" with the tune by a Russian magazine. Judge for yourself whether the Metal Gear theme is the result of plagiarism or coincidence.

The coldplay/Satriani thing is far closer to what I would think of as a ripoff.

I think the really important thing to note is that just as human culture globalizes, we're just going to see instances of multiple people creating similar things. Happens in art, in games, you name it. Just has to be accepted on a certain level.

For comparison:

Chrono Cross OST - Chronopolis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8PEzZ9pqkw
Obviously not exactly the same, but close enough that it caught my attention.
