Rockstar Responds to Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Woes, Explains Error Codes

by Chris Faylor, Dec 04, 2008 8:14am PST

Following reports of game-breaking problems with the recently-released PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, publisher Rockstar has issued a statement, acknowledging that it is "aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV."

"We would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible," the studio told Voodoo Extreme. Rockstar suggests having issues contact local technical support--the number is in the game's manual--as well as check out the Rockstar Games Support website, which is "regularly updated."

Included on the website is this suggested fix for the missing textures issue, which Rockstar says "may be associated with third party graphical performance tuners," along with a list of some error codes and fixes, reproduced below.

It seems the company has yet to directly address complaints that some, but not all, users cannot adjust certain graphical settings, nor has it directly responded to complaints that some players on high-end PCs are experiencing low performance.

However, this document stresses that users of "current PC hardware are advised to use medium graphics settings," as "the higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available."

As Shacknews previously noted, those experiencing the supposedly XP-only RMN40 error in Vista may be able to circumvent the error by installing Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework (download here) and rebooting. The MMA10 error, not listed below, requires users to log out of the Rockstar Social Club multiplayer utility in order to play.

Error Codes and Fixes:

RMN20Windows Vista: Need to have Service Pack 1 or higher to proceed.

RMN30Windows XP 64 / Server 2003: Need to have Service Pack 2 or higher to proceed.

RMN40Windows XP: Need to have Service Pack 3 or higher to proceed.

  • First of all,we shouldn't expect more when a game is ported from console to PC.
Second, when a game runs properly on XBOX360 and PS3 but doesn't run properly on PC,whose fault do you think it is considering the fact that both consoles are nothing in comparison to the current even mid-end PCs?
Third, who knows, maybe the 200k $ copy protection is causing some or these problems, good for pirates who wouldn't have these.Well,of course such problems should happen when the securom protection triggers every 2 seconds, even when checking the system requirements.I wonder how long will the disks/drives last this way!
