Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Dec 02, 2008 6:00pm PSTSo after much consideration and agonizing over this, I have decided that I really just
don't care about YouTube changing their format / layout. Really. I'll keep you posted if I
suddenly care and wish to start forum arguments on this pressing internet issue.

I'm competing for a contract. Here's the basic requirements from the customer:
1. An analysis of what we have (most of this was done in March)
2. A predictable and steady plan for replacing aging computers at a rate that is sustainable, compatible with outside technology, and productive for our employees. An estimated cost per year would be helpful.
3. A company which can provide us with this technology at good value.
I believe there are 10-12 computers, 1 or 2 servers. I can provide the assessment we got done in March as a start once I receive your quote. We have 2 other tenders and I hope to have a decision quickly.
So basically I need to check out their current setup/needs, investigate their plans for expansion/future needs and then do some research, perhaps work with an OEM on some sort of tender? and write a proposal.
My question is: How do I do a quote for this? I've never done this sort of thing on a consulting basis before (though I have done this on both ends at previous jobs). I mean, based on my hourly rate, should I give them a firm lump-sum quote (like.. $800 for the whole thing)? How do I determine how many hours it will take/what to charge? I assume I should include disclaimers that the price might change if the scope of the project changes? It seems weird that they want a quote before they meet... Should I insist on a meeting first? Making a quote just on that bit of info seems like bad news.
Does anyone have experience with this they'd like to share?

So far reviews have got me interested in the Panasonic DMR-EX78EB-K.
Does anyone here own this? Can anyone recommend any other make/model?
As a very rough guide, I'd like dual tuners and a reasonable amount of storage :)
Thank you, Shack

I opened a support ticket, gave them my CD Key, scanned in my Half-life 2 cd key with my username on it. And everything else they asked.
Do I have any hope of getting it back? Anyone else on here have to deal with this?
I went through all my accounts on every site I'm a member of changing my passwords just in case they were after more than my steam account.

So, he slept in the same bed last night, but got pissed because he was all in my face, I couldn't get to sleep - so I pushed him off. Usually if he's disturbed, he does this thing where he gets all emo and pounces away really forcefully off the bed to let you know he doesn't approve. It's very dramatic (for a cat).
OK, if you're still with me in this story...TLDR version, is that when he pounced away this time, he launched onto my wife's pregnant stomach, full force, on the way off the bed...she woke up and yelped and is still hurting from her stomach 3 hours later. Still in minor pain from where he did that :(
Does anyone know how strong the womb is, and should we be concerned? I'm freaked the fuck out, but I tend to do that...with a baby it's magnified times a billion.

So I turned off superfetch a week or two ago and my drive's have all but completely been silenced...SO NICE. But I miss seeing FF and Outlook open like a rocket!
Is there any way to adjust superfetch so that it only grabs shit you actually use on a regular basis instead of a still zipped copy of the Tomb Raider demo?

My wife wants to get either a new audio system or a better upscaling DVD player for Xmas/Hannukah. I'd rather hold off on the audio system, since I want a proper receiver, subwoofer and satellites, so the DVD player is what I'm focusing on.
I've had my eye on the Oppo DV-981HD ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LU8A7E ), which looks to be a best-of-class upscaling DVD player according to... a lot of people. However, my wife thinks that might be a bit expensive, and I'm not sure if we're savvy/sophisticated enough to notice the difference in video quality between the DV-981HD and a cheaper brand/model.
Can anyone here say whether the Oppo DV-981HD is worth it, based on personal viewing experience? Recommendations of good alternative upscaling DVD players are also greatly appreciated.

I dropped my mp3 player the other day, broke the volume thing, and while trying to open the case to glue it back together, I fried it. So I'm looking at MP3 players, and they're all trying to be giant annoying devices. I don't really care about watching movies on a 2" screen.
My phone would be great (w810i), except it requires a giant adapter in order to connect headphones to it. Just clunky, and irritating.

So, then why do so many people on XBL claim that using them isn't fair, is cheap, or proves one to be a noob? Chainsawing is what makes the game damn fun and I probably wouldn't play it otherwise.
Grr.
