F.E.A.R. 2 Developer Videos: Artificial or Intelligence?

by Nick Breckon, Dec 02, 2008 12:04pm PST

The original F.E.A.R. was an A.I. showcase, and developer Monolith promises to improve on its efforts with the upcoming sequel.

As engineer Matt Rice explains, the A.I. in F.E.A.R. is really not all that complex on paper--but I'll let him explain the tricks in the following video.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC, X360, PS3) will hit store shelves on February 10.

  • The original Ai was very impressive, the npcs/ai used to comunicate (along the lines of flanking/calling for support etc), made good use of cover and enviorment (iirc i saw a dude crouching/crawling under a pipe to get away from a grenade i threw from way above).

i think the dude was spot on when he was gushing about how it never plays the same way because when i quickloaded a savegame the npc never did the same thing.

finally the most important thing i noticed was that the ai failed in a smart way, not getting stuck in the wall like stalker did occasionally but that the aim was not xearo perfect like in farcry where a lone sniper could spot you six miles away with a rocket launcher.
