Fallout 3 DLC, Mod Tools Detailed and Dated

Developer Bethesda today revealed the first details of the "substantial" PC and Xbox 360-exclusive downloadable content for Fallout 3, including an episode that takes place after the main story concludes, and issued word of a mod kit for PC users.

The mod toolset, dubbed G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will arrive as a free download for PC users in December. "Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more," wrote Bethesda.

Three pieces of game-expanding downloadable content were announced for PC and Xbox 360 users, set to arrive on a monthly basis beginning in January. No price point was specified, though Bethesda offered the following descriptions:

  • Operation: Anchorage
Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe - the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
  • The Pitt
Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
  • Broken Steel
Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

Launched October 28 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the post-apocalyptic RPG shipped 4.7 million units and brought in over $300 million during its first week at retail. In addition to the DLC, Bethesda is currently working on a patch.

I can't wait. Just started playing this this week and I have almost never been as drawn into the world of a game as I have with this one. It's just staggering the amount of work that must have gone into this game. It's like Bethesda looked at Oblivion, made a list of what was wrong with it, and then put all that knowledge into Fallout 3.
Plus it's cool walking into an area with really cool lighting and thinking about how a fellow Shacker did that.

Also, in case you're curious, I did a metric crapton of work on The Pitt.

Did? As in, it's done already?

It comes out in February, so no it's not done.

Was just curious. It's not inconceivable that it was done already and they were holding it back for MS QA and/or perceived maximizing profits. The wording was a tad ambiguous.

Any idea on the length of each of the DLC chapters? 4-5 hours?

I was wondering the same thing. Although, what the hell, doesn't matter to me...instant download.

        Can't wait to see it.
Random aside: my 2 favorite quests have been the one with the kid from arefu (don't want to ruin it) and the one about GNR and the dish - I loved the museum of technology.
