Relic Teases Homeworld 3
by Chris Faylor, Nov 24, 2008 10:25am PSTInvestigating a fabled third entry in Relic Entertainment's sci-fi RTS series Homeworld, Eurogamer came up with some curious answers from senior staff members.
The THQ-owned studio is known to have three games in development--Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, and the Asian-geared Company of Heroes Online with developer Shanda--and acquired the Homeworld IP from Vivendi last year.
"[Homeworld 3 is] as it always has--behind closed doors. Blacked off," Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor designer Chris Degnan responded when asked of the mythical project. "Homeworld 3, obviously, I'm not at liberty to tell you anything about."
"We're really happy the IP has made its way home, and yeah, we're definitely looking at it. We'll see what happens in the future," Dawn of War II lead designer Jonny Ebbert said.
Upon further inquiry, Ebbert noted "there's always that chance" that Homeworld 3 could be among the studio's current projects.
General manager Tarrnie Williams revealed that the studio has "three or four" titles in the works, saying that "it depends how you count; whether you use the old math or the new math." He refused to specify the difference between old math or new math.

I will never be as excited for a game launch as I would be with HW3.

...now we just need a new tie fighter/xwing, freespace, or freelancer and the space genre will be almost completely revived (multiplayer necessary. I love X3: TC, but I miss the multiplayer from Freelancer, and Eve doesn't cut it b/c of subscription fees)

I find the mere prospect of Homeworld 3 rather exciting, at a time when I find it difficult to even get excited about the games that are already out.
Put me in one of the ships.
Put all my friends in each of the other ships.
Let us play online.

Is today Christmas?! Already?! Relic, you are too good to me!
My questions is: What lessons learned from DoW and CoH will make it into the Homeworld universe? Cover system? Take cover behind capitol ships or asteroids?
The difficulty with 3D space RTS is that it is often difficult to move and plan in the "up and down" axis. Hopefully they have discovered some new ideas on how to make this all more intuitive. My favorite HW to date is Cataclysm, which i know was developed out of house but hopefully they are taking their time with the story. I just hope they are taking their time with this one, we all really want this to succeed.

Just tell us if you're even working on the game instead of dodging the question. GAHHH!

I remember following Homeworld and I got the game 2 weeks before the shelf date, those were the days.
