Xbox 360 Outsells Original Xbox

13
Microsoft has confirmed that the the Xbox 360 has now outsold the original Xbox, meaning that it has sold over 25 million units worldwide since its 2005 launch.

"We've already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox--which is a really significant milestone," Microsoft entertainment VP Chris Lewis told MCV.

"We're at a price point that is uniquely placed--not least of which because we're in somewhat of a challenging economic time," he added. " Ever since we dropped the price seven weeks ago, we've outstripped PS3 on a weekly run rate in all the territories we care about in EMEA--specifically the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Russia."

Lewis did not provide an exact figure as to how many Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide thus far. As of September 30, Nintendo had sold 34.55 million units of the Wii hardware, with Sony's PlayStation 3 sitting at 16.84 million units worldwide.

MS has done an outstanding job with the 360, congrats.

The only thing I can bitch about now that the new update is out, is about only two things:

    - Provide 250 - 500 gig HDD
    - For the love of god drop the mother f$%$#$ HDD prices, I baught a second 120 gig HDD and it almost caost the price of a 360 arcade unit.

    * Or you could always make a new 360 model that has a slot loading DVD or BlueRay drive that is as quiet as the PS3, that would work as well *

They should have done what was done with the PS3 HDD.

I know WTF hey , why oh why did they not do that?

        Would of been sweet.

The thing is they could still do it, I took apart a 20 gig its the same laptop HDD that the ps3 has or PC laptop. So they could update the firmware and sell a new HDD caraidge and let user do what ever they want if they wanted too.

        But probaly not gona happen.

I think the idea of how burned they got by modded Xbox1 systems with larger hard drives caused them to go the proprietary route.

They should drop that uniqe HD key thing, sell just an user changable, empty harddrive module, and compatibility test the 360 with a couple of popular drives. That would be nice... But probably not very profitable.

" But probably not very profitable. "

Yep, which is probably the reason it hasn't happened. :(

The newer 360's are much quieter when playing games from the DVD. They're not as quiet as the PS3 though.

Are you talking about the Falcon systems? I bought a new Elite when I had to send my first run Elite in because the video ports died. I got the old one back and gave it to my brother in law but I compared them and they both are still pretty loud.

I accrued a fair amount of MS hate during the 1990s especially when I believed that the Linux/open source revolution was the one true path. Today, in the console arena, MS does deserve a hat tip. They have played the game well.

On the software front they made smart moves with exclusive deals and paid the right devs to go multiplatform. They really did improve console gaming with Xbox Live. The PS2 era was a stand alone era but online is now mainstream and MS's work is pushing the industry forward. Live is their major trump card and they are smart to bring Live to Windows. It can only help them.

On the hardware front the chips inside the 360 have plenty of horsepower. The GPU is comparable or superior to the PS3's and its CPU is no slouch next to the Cell. They were foolish to try and design their own ASIC in house and when it came to manufacturing the they dropped the ball big time. To their credit they swallowed their pride, went public with a $1 billion fuck up, and offered free repairs though they really didn't have a choice. If they hadn't performed free repairs they would have lost their customer base.

All in all, back in 2005, nobody gave them a chance in hell against Sony. I didn't give them a chance in hell. The Playstation brand should have wiped the floor with the Xbox but Sony was their own worst enemy this time around. Microsoft made some good moves and Sony made some bad moves. That's what needs to happen to unseat an incumbent. You, as the upstart, MUST play smart and you have to hope luck breaks your way and your competition does something really, really dumb. From the price point to no cohesive online plan to a weak game lineup, Sony did exactly that.
