Netscape 6.0B1 Leak

Fileclicks has the beta1 of Netscape 6.0 (unofficial though, so not the finished beta), the first Netscape using the Gecko engine. Since it's beta, you can probably expect some problems (although non beta Netscape usually crashes too ;) ). It's a 16mb download. Thanks Ryan Stotts.

  • Opera is great, it's just too far behind on the standards.

Their major selling point is that they're 100% standards compliant. Too bad the standards they are compliant with are HTML 3.2 (not 4.0) and JavaScript 1.1 (not 1.2). This, combined with the fact that alot of pages use "fancy" HTML that is not in any standard, but works in IE and/or Netscape, results in alot of pages looking like crap in Opera.

The browser itself is alot faster, alot nicer on your system resources, and it's tiny, which makes it a quick download and easy to fit on your hard drive. (And no, I don't work for Opera, I just like their ideology of following standards. If everyone followed the HTML standards, web developing would be alot easier.)

  • I just downloaded this thing, and it SUCKS. Granted, I will give it kudos for loading much more quickly than netscape4, but here's my gripes:

    1. it fucks up rendering complex pages (most notably my company's internal site)... note that the page works FINE on netscape4

    2. It's ALL in java. The whole interface has that swing-type slowness, as well as the fact that it's all basicly done in a dos-type window (ie the menu bar is crappy looking, border around the whole thing, etc).

also, the sections (address bar, favorites, etc) are not true sections, they're just... well.. BLEH.. i can't describe it... it's just NOT the right way to do it

Overall, I just don't like the "feel" of it.
