Sources: Gearbox Shelves Aliens Title Amid Layoffs (Updated)
by Nick Breckon, Nov 22, 2008 3:27am PSTUpdate 2: Pitchford has reiterated to Shacknews that production on Aliens is still ongoing, though he did not go into further detail on the status of the project, only stating that to say it has "halted" is an "inaccurate characterization."
Update: Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has responded to the rumors in a comment post, saying that Aliens: Colonial Marines has not been cancelled.
"Aliens isn't canned," said Pitchford. "We've made some transformative changes and yes, that's meant some talent changes, but that's not the real story. The true relevance of the story will actually be irrelevant until we release our next game, at which time I hope there will be a lot of interest in what we've done that can produce such results."
Original story: Production on Gearbox Software's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC, 360, PS3), a four player co-op shooter based on the classic film franchise, has been halted, according to multiple sources.
Several sources have also told Shacknews that Gearbox today laid off between 15 and 25 employees, with one putting the number at 26. These sources independently claimed that the poor performance of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway and the stoppage of work on the Aliens title were contributing factors to the layoffs.
Though specific sales data on Hell's Highway is unavailable, the title debuted on the NPD group's weekly PC sales chart at ninth position, before quickly falling off the following week. Hell's Highway did not place on the US console sales chart for either September or October--the console versions of Hell's Highway were released on September 23--though publisher Ubisoft partly attributed its strong second quarter sales to the game.
Aliens: Colonial Marines was announced in February. Billed as an authentic Aliens shooter, Colonial Marines was backed by a strong pre-production team, including writers from the hit TV show Battlestar Galactica. The Sega-published title was previously scheduled for release in 2009.
Gearbox has expanded to develop a wide range of projects recently, shipping Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway (PC, 360, PS3) and Samba de Amigo (Wii) earlier this year while simultaneously working on its original shooter Borderlands (PC, 360, PS3).

But, relax, guys - Aliens isn't canned. Also, Borderlands is shaping up to be sick and I think it's going to turn out to be really fresh and great. But, the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. So we're just going to have to keep our heads down and deliver.
The new mantra around Gearbox is: Quality, Focus, Performance.
Which means that until we ship our next game, none of this really matters. What needs to happen is that we need to just bring it and offer you guys a kick ass Borderlands game and a kick ass Aliens game.
If we kick ass, you'll check it out and hopefully give us some respect. If we suck, you'll tell us as you love to do.
We've done some sucking and we've done some kicking ass. We always get involved with things that have the potential to kick ass. I think that's why people get so pissed off at us when we suck, because the promise was so strong.
But we reach far and try hard and when you swing for the fences, sometimes you hit foul balls. The good news is that when we suck, we've gotten better. It's like tuition or something. We pay for our education.
I know you guys will enjoy ripping into us when you smell blood, but if you care about Aliens turning out good or Borderlands turning out good, you should consider egging us on. You don't have to cheer lead - that's lame. But you can egg us on. It actually does have an impact.

Any specific reason you decided to remove the co-op modes that were in the older BiA games and replace the multiplayer mode with a more generic game type?
Also I hate you for having a higher gamerscore than me.
