Mirror's Edge PC Trailer Gets Physical
by Blake Ellison, Nov 19, 2008 12:55pm PSTA trailer for the PC edition of EA DICE's Mirror's Edge (PC, 360, PS3) has arrived, and even though the parkour-inspired action game is out for consoles, the trailer shows something new. The PC version has picked up Nvidia's PhysX physics acceleration, promising more detailed gameplay and better visuals for Nvidia hardware owners.
The updated PC port is due on store shelves in January.

Will the features merely come with better performance through acceleration to Nvidia card users, or will it not be possible to enable them at all unless you're running an Nvidia card capable of PhysX acceleration? Which, according to that fine print at the beginning of the trailer, is apparently only the 9800GTX and above?
With PhysX's track record, and the relatively small amount of people who will actually own one of those cards, I'd guess this is going to make very little difference to most people. Unless there'll be some crazy way to hack everything inside of .ini files a la the Crysis "DX10 exclusive" features? Seems such a shame too with how pretty that all looked.

I thought the whole premise was she was an unarmed runner?

I gotta say as someone who has already played through the game on 360, and this is admittedly just a peripheral observation based on the trailer, that these changes seem so subtle and the situations they are using to portray the advancements so circumstantial that I highly doubt they really make that much of a dramatic difference.
I know they shouldn't make much of a difference ideally, but in terms of aesthetic impact, I'm fairly confident I wouldn't be shooting flags or plastic walls very much. The one effect that I'm fairly confident will be cool to see is the smoke effects responding to movement, though.
I have a PhysX-capable card though so I can't wait to be proven wrong or right. Either way, it's a great unique game and I'm glad the port is coming as soon as it is rather than a year later. If I had to pick sides if pressed, I will always fight for PC gaming. Bring it on, I say.
