Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Nov 11, 2008 1:51am PSTLet's give it up for Tuesday, shall we?
While I'm at it, props to the Dunkin' Donuts marketing department. With a national ad campaign proclaiming that people prefer Dunkin' Donuts coffee over Starbucks, I was curious enough to buy a bag of DD coffee beans instead of the usual Starbucks blend.
Now, I don't know if it is actually better, it's still brewing as I type this, but I'm not going to be surprised one way or another. And hey, one more day until Mirror's Edge hits stores? Hooray Tuesday!

Anyways I've been using it for the last couple of months with my WAMU account (and recently hooked up my two other bank accounts) and have been using it to keep track of pending purchases and uncleared checks, its pretty handy if you're not good at math and like to see pie charts telling you that you're spending all most as much on food every month as you are rent.

Does anyone know any movies or things of memorable sport speeches in the vein of Al Pacino's amazing pre-game talk in Any Given Sunday? Is there anything out there that can even compare?

I have been really disappointed with this season. It seems to be like every episode has involved the detectives taking huge jumps to conclusions. The evidence that causes them to investigate who they end up investigating just seem so tenuous and it completely breaks the immersion for me.
So have any of you noticed the same thing? I am wondering if the show is actually tending more in this direction or if I am just becoming more critical. I feel like the older seasons had a lot more believable (as much as this show can be of course) plots.

Well, just played a couple of hours on both Advanced and Expert with a group of random strangers. Everybody was instantly working together as a team, which I think speaks highly of game design. Natural teamwork is a necessity for online games, and I think very few games actually allow this to happen in a public setting. TF2 is the last game to come this close to encouraging natural teamwork, but lately it seems that all the public servers have devolved back into "everybody off doing their own thing." I think L4D takes the teamwork thing to a whole new level, which is awesome.
As for the gameplay, though, I'm a bit disappointed. Shooting and blowing up hordes of zombies is awesome, yes, but gets repetitive fast. The problem is that there's really no variety to the combat. All you do is walk around and shoot. True, the same could be said for every other FPS game, but that would be an over-generalization. In game like TF2 you're juggling different character skills and tricks (rocket-jumping, cloaking, turret-building, ubers) against intelligent (gamers, lol) opponents with access to the same skills. You end up with gloriously complex battles that rarely play out the same way twice. L4D simply can't compete with that kind of experience. What you gain in easy access to cooperative team members, you lose in gameplay depth.
Some of my best memories from multiplayer gaming are Shackbattles in either Battlefield 1942 or TF2. When a team comes together in a big, sandbox game like that, the experience is unmatched. The sad truth is, though, that finding an experience like that is 1 in a hundred these days. The large majority of "public server gamers" simply suck--having either no idea how to play the game, or no desire to communicate with other players.
I applaud Left 4 Dead for bringing a good, public multiplayer experience to the masses. The inherently forced teamwork works brilliantly. And admittedly, the simple gameplay probably has a large hand in making this possible. Still, though, coming from games like 1942 and TF2 (hell, even as far back as Tribes) I still long for the day when deep games can be played to their full design potential by the brainless masses. To me, L4D feels like one step forward and two steps back for multiplayer gaming :(

I just sat in and test drove a Challenger SRT8. It was an absolutely unbelievable experience.
What a beautiful, beautiful car.

While I was there, I picked up a 430EX II flash for my 40D. So much nicer than the built in flash, I'm glad I finally picked one up.
Then I drove the Challenger SRT8. The salesman has my name and number and will be calling me in a day or so when he has a red RT moved up from the FWB dealership.

Looks like everything except Halo 3 benefits, although the benefits for very optimized games is minimal. Makes sense.

So I've never had a Nestle Chunk before. For years I've seen the silver square package staring me begging me to buy it. Well I broke down tonight.
WTF.
What a horrid piece of crap, this so called 'chocolate, raisins, and peanut cluster' is. I took one bite, and couldn't even force myself to swallow it. Terrible texture, even worse flavor, and goddamn awful after taste. It is the Brian Peppers of chocolate. Threw the fucking thing right where it belongs: in the trash. Fuck it, the trash is too good for it. The maggots and night crawlers roaming our dumps dont deserve that kind of torture. Seriously, why do they make these things? And who the fuck keeps buying them? Ick.
okay, internet alerted. time to cleanse the palate.

I figure I would feel the crushing humiliation of providing only a minimal amount of money to the "family". Any shackers are living that situation?

Most important question: what version of SecuROM will be used?
It's using a combination of SecuROM and Starforce so that the game will require a CD in the drive, a USB key to be inserted and the reading of a particular word on a particular page of the user manual (which won't be hard since it'll only have a 2 page manual naturally).
The docs, which we expect to be written by fans, will be online only which will be fine since the game will require players to be on-line at all times due to the by-the-hour activation checks the game makes to the single player mode.
Also, the game won't work if you have any CD-ROM burning software including the built in media player software (users will naturally need to uninstall any media players including iTunes in order to play).
All of this will be integrated into the game by our eastern-european CD manufacturer (the copy we send there will be completely clean of course) so we're confident that no pirates will get it...
(incidentally, this Q and A was a joke) ;)"

I have a court appearance tomorrow morning at 8am. Today is Vet day so they are not open. I'm going to leave a voicemail telling them I can't make it. (with case number, name, etc). My apartment is flooding because of a sink issue, which is true. Will I get in trouble for this? Also the court is 3 hours away because that's where I got pulled over.
Opinions? I don't want this to be a bigger issue then it is.
