Publisher Microsoft today revealed the Limited Collector's Edition version of Halo Wars (360), the final strategy game from the soon-to-be-closed Ensemble Studios.

Arriving in February and priced at $79.99--$20 more than the $59.99 standard edition--the Halo Wars LCE will sport a snazzy metal case and the following bonuses:

  • Three New "Halo 3" Multiplayer Maps - Be one of the first to experience the Mythic Map Pack from Bungie which includes three new maps, "Assembly," "Orbital" and "Sandbox"
  • Halo Wars: Genesis- a beautiful graphic novel by Phil Noto, Graeme Devine and Eric Nylund chronicling the first military campaign against the Covenant. The novel centers around the Sprit of Fire on a mission to discover why the Covenant are so interested in the world of Harvest
  • Unique In-game Vehicle - "Honor Guard" Wraith
  • Six Leader Cards - Leaders possess elite skills which can turn the tides of battle
  • Spirit of Fire Patch - Start the journey as an official Spirit of Fire crew member

In addition, select retailers will award players with a code for a "special in-game Warthog vehicle with flame decals" in exchange for a pre-order.

This 'trend' of having special content for those getting various CE packages is not so good in my opinion.

I don't mind CE releases at all - I think they are great actually. As long as they keep things the same INSIDE the game, no matter what version you bought.

What's wrong with getting what you pay for?

Paying for maps is a problem in general. It divides the online community. It's especially bad in Halo3 because of the way they split up the matchmaking playlists. Want to play team SWAT? Not if you didn't by the new maps. Too bad for you.

Like I said - I do not mind CE releases at all.
Everything that is added outside the game is more than awesome. I have certainly bought my share of games / movies released this way.

What I do mind is one game having different versions of gameplay. That should be the same for everyone who buys game X. It has nothing to do with getting what you pay for. It is minor changes yes, but the experience isn't the same for all - which it in my opinion should be.

Hopefully that vehicle is just a different skin and not a strategically unique unit. Otherwise that's pretty lame, especially for an RTS.

What kpxkrnjc means that if people may more why shouldn't they get more all around. It does have something to do with someone getting more by paying more. In my view, if I was a developer, I would thank my hardcore fans who bought and shelled out extra for the CE of my game by not only giving them a making of DVD, metal case and art book but something cool in game too. It's what should make a CE special, one of the reasons why it is a CE. It's not like others didn't have the opportunity to get the CE of a game also.
