Morning Discussion: Daylight Saving Edition
by Chris Faylor, Nov 03, 2008 4:07am PSTGood Monday to you, fellow Shackers. I do hope everyone in North America set their clocks an hour back yesterday, else today's going to be a bit kooky.
Here in Indiana, we've only observed Daylight Saving Time for a few years now. I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it, chiefly that the one-hour loss in spring sucks, but it's awesome when you gain that hour back in the fall and get to sleep in a bit later.
Oh, and did you know that the time shift leads to more heart attacks?

This is an article basically saying Apple is out of touch with their iPhone customers based on software/firmware features.
This is my opinion, and maybe I'm wrong, but I like to give brilliant organizations and products the benefit of the doubt. I don't think it is Apple that is out of touch with consumers, I think it is consumers and the press that are out of touch with the development of technology. No one outside of Apple is really clear on what their development roadmap for the product really is.
Highly demanded features that haven't been implemented or fixed might not be small problems, or they may be solutions that cause other problems. What they are doing is working on the product as best as they see fit which is likely finding the balance between what their customers say and what their engineering efforts can maintain. The beauty of the device is how much complexity is presented in blunt simplicity. On the other hand it causes indignant comments about things like copy and paste and mms. How would anyone outside of the people actually working on it have any idea how hard or easy something like that is to implement?
They aren't microsoft, they aren't going to cram a million features into a product and push it to market with all of them performing half-ass. I think the press and consumers should really show a lot more respect. These people managed to bring a product to market that is really a paradigm shift in hand held devices. Can we not just trust them to know what they're doing? This is causing me high blog pressure and I am going to have a twitter attack.

He takes some routes in there that I'd never have even thought to try. Pay particular attention to the part inside the building.

i must say, i am absolutely sold and blown away with how great this thing is. for all the stuff she and i use laptops for, it kicks ass. throw in that nifty multi-touch thing on top of that... shit....
obviously for desktop / gaming you gotta stick with a PC but as far as a laptop goes, holy shit i know for sure my next laptop will be a mac. also installed vmware fusion / xp on the thing just to have.
so in closing, mac laptops OSX are hot shit. for email / family picture and video stuff / etc. the hardware is adorable too, but really its OSX that i am impressed with.

-Release it like Crysis Warhead, stand-alone, $30, with upgraded graphics (UE3.5)
-Redesigned UI
-PC exclusive, so Epic can re-establish themselves as a PC developer (unlikely, but what the hell...)
-All of the old gamemodes from previous UT games, and more new ones
-A long public beta testing phase in order to gain user feedback
-Bug fixes
-Heavily tweaked and new maps
There is probably more...but I can't think of anything. If they were really ambitious I'd ask for a retooled art direction that is more distinctive, containing less of the muddiness and overly bulky characters.

HOW THE @#$@ Do I get to the Rangers Compound? I went to Metro Central and started walking toward the marker. It lead me to little narrow alley where I can go down a sewer manhole called Seward Sq.
I got down it but the only exit is fucking Penn. Ave which is way in the wrong direction. HAAAAALP!

So he's calling her a whore, calling my mom a whore, going off on her saying that what my sister's doing is an affront against God and christianity. Then he calls ME up, asks if I have gay friends (and I do) and tells me I shouldn't, because they're an aberration and another affront against God. If I try to talk against his point of view, he more or less yells until I either hang up or say "Okay." long enough for him to hang up.
So how do I deal with a person like this? I need to make him shut the fuck up because my sister can't handle this kind of stress, my mother doesn't deserve these attacks.

The world was destroyed in 2077 according to legend, but the remnants of American civilization are 1940's and 1950's style, which I feel adds a ton of nostalgic believability to the game. The pre Cold War era of idyllic productivity where the nastier elements of society tended to be subjugated and well-hidden. Formica tables, bulbous refrigerators, scratchy tube radios, overly-sugared, overly-marketed sweet snacks.
I was saying the other day that the city was the star in GTAIV. I'm starting to feel that way about Fallout 3. There is such a density of discoverable items, towns, and dungeons that there is literally something around every corner. In stark contrast with Oblivion, which I loved: the world was beautiful but very, very vacant.

Did anyone else have Tenpenny die when you told the Goul leader that they could move in (the peaceful ending). I had the mission to kill Tenpenny and as soon as I exited the tunnels I got credit for it and when I went to the tower there was no explanation.
Anyone?

Multiple time's I've heard/ read that Far Cry 2 contains 50^2 miles of map space. This means that if I'm in a car going 60mph (virtually, of course) it will take me 50 minutes to cross the map in a straight line. Far Cry 2 splits the map into two regions, but that's beside the point.
I'm playing the game and the map(s) aren't nearly that large. And some trickery is in play when driving: the speedometer says 60mph+ but the car is only going about 25-30mph -- slow -- judging by how fast the scenery flies by.
Is there a 3rd or 4th map that I haven't unlocked yet?

there's a new version of shackmarks out. it now works with the new profile pages. there's growing integration with the various API tools like winchatty, shackdroid, and latestchatty... so shackmarks is definitely becoming more useful.
if you haven't tried it, get greasemonkey and give it a go.

Has anyone been playing Rock Band with the GH: WT drums and guitar? Rock Band has just finally been released here in Australia and GH:WT is released here next week. I was planning on getting GH:WT complete pack (guitar, drums and game) and just getting Rock Band the game. I think I read that Rock Band detects your using the GH:WT drums and changes something?

It's not Oblivion with guns, it's Oblivion with fun
I played this game A LOT this weekend and as I was checking the map I noticed I've only uncovered about 1/2 of it.
Also lol @ Moira turning into a ghoul after you nuke Megaton!

IS this game like oblivion where the stronger I get, the stronger the enemies around me become? I hope not (I already feel a bit under powered as it is).
