Left 4 Dead Screenshots Illuminate Airport Campaign

23
Publisher Electronic Arts today released probably the best batch of screenshots I've seen from Valve's multiplayer zombie shooter Left 4 Dead (PC, 360). Sure, much the game is played in dark hallways and pitch-black cornfields, and those are some great levels--but they don't always translate well to picture form. These shots taken from the Dead Air levels--the campaign set in and around an airport--provide a nice contrast to earlier media.

You can see--and play--Left 4 Dead in moving form on November 18, with pre-order customers getting their hands on the demo November 6.

Gfx look terrible. You can see classic HL2 fire effects in that first shot. Yikes!

Sorry but Valve games >>>>>>>> Crytek games

And Crytek is the virtually indisputable king of graphical quality.

      Want to know why?

I agree it's about gameplay. But all I ask is to at least look somewhat current generation when I shell out $50. This screams "HL2 TEXTURE BIN!!!!!!!!"

well if its all about gameplay why do you give a toss about gfx? that was such a dumbass argument.

As far as I'm concerned they can keep making games with the source engine for infinity, they look good and run on medium spec computers comfortably.

Are you an ass? The character models are outstandingly detailed.

Someone remind my why the source engine is "dated" again?

Yeah, the engine is really starting to show its age. Hopefully Source gets put to rest soon in favor of a new one for Valve's next big project (EP3 notwithstanding).

Luckily it's not the graphics drawing people to this game.

No, they'll continue improving it just like they have with every other game they've released in the last 4 years.

Just for once can we have a Left 4 Dead thread without the usual "source is so old" bullshit? The graphics are as good as any other game released this year, Crysis Warhead being the sole exception

ill take game play over graphics any day of the week. thousands still play CS everyday and millions play WoW everyday. are those games "da uber gfx!". no. they play for the game play.

Yeah, no kidding. Talk about shooting your own argument in the foot - those games are more about mass-market follow-the-crowd mentality than about the triumphs of great gameplay over graphics. People play CS still (disappointingly) because their crappy PCs can still run it and that's about it.

Bullshit. I play Counter-Strike because it's incredibly balanced, relies more on my skill (and less on a flaming awesome rig, because the flaming awesome rig of 2004 is now standard fare in 2008), and I can play with my friends over Steam without problems, the modding, skinning, and mapping community helps refresh the gameplay, and...

By "balanced" you mean that everyone just buys the same guns(so it's "fair"), because 90% of weapons being useless isn't exactly the epitome of balance.

I love Source engine games. Run so damn well and Valve's artists do brilliant things with it.

I tend to agree with Boulder94 here, to some extent. I don't think that the Gfx are "terrible", per se, but they definitely don't stand out like some game's screenies do. Still, this looks to have incredibly fun gameplay all around, so I'm still stoked for it.

For you to say that the gfx are terrible you want to do the following:

      a) Open your eyes

      b) Open your eyes wider

      c) Take a look at the facial animations in-game that take place and see if any other game matches those as well as this game or any other Valve game

      and

      d) Buy a good graphics card to take advantage of the advanced shadowing that takes place in Left 4 Dead

Valve games are bar-none the best on the market.

No one has better game play when it comes to these games or stories or animation or... need I keep going?

NOTE: I am biased as I do work for team V

Valve is my favorite company but I;ve been disappointed lately with their gfx and especialy TF2. I;m sure I will buy this, as I do all Valve products ever since HL1. But they need to start changing things up - the gameplay modes in TF2 are awful (static control points? zzzzzzz) and while HL1 and HL2 are masterpieces, the half life series is really starting to show it's age with EP1 and EP2 with the on-a-rails gameplay. Hopefully they are looking at a Crysis 2 type of open, non-linear environment for the third episode of HL2.
