Mortal Kombat vs. DC Censored for Teen Rating

With Midway Chicago's magical fighter Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (PS3, 360) nearing its November 16 release, the game has seen some of its more violent fatalities scaled back in order to attain the lucrative T for Teen rating from the ESRB.

"At least three" revisions have been submitted to the ESRB, creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon told Kotaku, with The Joker and Kitana's fatalites tweaked.

In previous builds of the game, The Joker's fatality saw the famed villain shoot a fake gun, complete with "Bang!" flag, before pulling out a real gun and shot them in the head. Now, players will only see the fake gun bit, with the real headshot occurring offscreen.

As for Kitana, the ESRB took issue with a fatality that saw her jab razor-sharp fans through an opponent's forehead and torso. In order to be T-complaint, the head injury portion was modified, with both fans now entering an opponent's mid-section.

What they SHOULD do is release multiple damn versions of the game! The T rating version so that they can sell it in more "markets" and the M (director's 'cut') version for old school MK fans. They could still play together onlilne. You would just see different animations. Financially I sorta understand why Midway did it. But, they essentially sold out. And all the old school MK fans will probably hate the T rating and ignore it.

Sign of the apocalypse when one of the original 'bad boys' of gaming bows to censorship. Regardless of how one feels about Mortal Kombat it was one of the few games that pushed the limits on what you or could not show in a video game, along with games like Doom.

This will unfortunately be reflected poorly in reviews and consumer reception, as fatalities are MK's main attraction. I do still plan to buy the game, as I've actually always enjoyed MK's fighting mechanics, which were expanded a great deal in MK4, and the last three games. It'll never be as deep as VF or most other fighters, but I feel the games have a strong enough foundation without fatalities to still be enjoyable.

Honestly, though, I hope that the inevitable MK9 ditches the DC characters, which are undoubtedly the reason for its T rating. If MK9 can maintain strong fighting mechanics and incorporate darker fatalities that will revert the series back to its M-rated glory, I'm sure more interest will be garnered from the get-go, which sadly isn't the case with this game.

This game woulda done so much better if they hadn't used the name Mortal Kombat. Any other universe but the MK one. And yes I am using past tense because I already expect it to fail. I am glad SF4 is being released soon and SC4 is already out making this game worthless.

The original Joker fatality wasn't even that violent, but now.... LOL. Why is he dancing like a fag after it anyway? Apparantly dancing like a fag < shooting someone in the head.

Not only does this game suck, now it mega-sucks. This is regressive. I am reminded of a time when I bought a Genesis instead of an SNES because the Genesis version of MK kept the blood and fatalities.

Still have no idea how midway is in business.

Friend of mine works for midway and worked on this game.

I talked to him alot about the game, as I've always been a big fan of MK games.

It wasn't only the ESRB making them scale stuff back (Or is that the excuse they are using?)

Alot of it was DC. They didn't want Sub-Zero ripping Superman in half, pulling out his spinal cord.

In essence, it boiled down to DC not wanting the game to be too violent for it's characters. That, and I guess they wanted the T rating for the selling point?

Still sucks .... I'm thinking this is a rental

The insane violence is the only thing that makes the Mortal Kombat series somewhat unique. You take that out of the equation and people will lose interest. The Joker's fatality was the only thing that looked cool in the whole game!
