Star Wars Galaxies Won't Die With New Star Wars MMO
by Blake Ellison, Oct 24, 2008 2:05pm PDTLucasArts has confirmed that Star Wars Galaxies (PC), the 2003 MMO from Sony Online Entertainment, won't be in danger of getting the axe because of Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC), the highly-anticipated MMO from BioWare Austin announced this week.
"We have many other features planned to support Star Wars Galaxies," said LucasArts' Tom Nichols to Eurogamer. "We see no reason why the two games can't exist together," he added. LucasArts is acting as publisher for The Old Republic.
Galaxies repeatedly came under fire from critics for not properly fulfilling most players' Star Wars fantasies. "We've learned how important it is to listen to your community and act on that feedback," Nichols explained.
"We also realised what players expect from an online Star Wars game--they expect to be that iconic Star Wars hero as soon as possible. They don't want to play for hundreds of hours just to become a Jedi," continued Nichols. BioWare promises to capitalize on what LucasArts has learned.

SWG may be open, but its still "dead" already.
and tom nicholes is an idiot. playing for hundreds of hours to earn jedi is exactly what i wanted to do, and did, before lucas arts and sony boned me with the nge. if im going to put effort into something i want it to feel like i've spent time earning something worth that time. and i wanted to feel like the challenge was worth the goal. swg felt that way for me, up until the nge, even with the CU.
in fact, now i'm sitting here wondering why i'm still paying for this thing.
first lesson any company that does research needs to learn is, give people what they want, not what they say they want or you think they mean they want.
swg WAS a game with a steep learning curve and a awesome community. everytime i discovered and mastered a new process i felt like i had really achieved something in game. now its so dumbed down its hard to feel like you do anything but point and click. and the community is so dead there's no one to really learn those things from, or achieve them wtih.
I mean, I doubt SWOR won't be out until at least 2011.

If they would have removed Jedi from the game again completely and would have worked on bugs and content instead of turning this game into this horrible abomination wihout it's skill based system, this could have worked really well and would even have a chance to coexist with a brand new "WoW-clone StarWars game".
I guess a lot of people wanted to be a Jedi because they were bored out of their mind and it was the only thing left to do, and because it was something "special" since you had to earn it. At least that's true for me, I unlocked my Jedi and played him for 5 minutes to assemble a lightsaber. U-hu, /logout
SWG has already been dead for years.
The game is just too old now, the game is a ghost town, and it just flat-out isn't fun.
