Gears of War 2 Trailer: Artistic Sensibilities

By Blake Ellison, Oct 15, 2008 12:08pm PDT Gears of War 2 takes a break from the "jock, fratboy, macho bullshit in the game" to discuss the more artsy side of things.

Designer Cliff Bleszinski, artist James Hawkins, and Epic president Mike Capps discuss their artistic influences as applied to their Xbox 360-exclusive shooter sequel after asserting that games indeed can be art.

The run-for-cover war against the Locusts continues on November 7, but if you need a return to the macho bullshit, hit up today's multiplayer guide.

  • So they're pumping the artistic value of their hypermacho violencefest without mentioning the only redeeming feature it has for the single-player? (That being the fact that it's one of the few games out there where you get to play as the bad guys slaughtering the good.) Yeah, way to go Epic.

And the fact that it includes the "hey, look, unrealistically large ripples!" footage is even more evidence that they don't seem to quite get what the central point of the 'games as art' phase is, and seem to think it just means games that look good.
