Gears of War 2 Designer Claims Industry Visionaries Deserve Celebration
by Blake Ellison, Oct 13, 2008 5:15pm PDTGears of War 2 producer Cliff Bleszinski thinks that the industry's superstar designers deserve a little more attention--at least to the extent that the games business can benefit from them.
"I don't think the industry values visionaries as much as it could," Bleszinski said to Gamasutra. "Look at a guy like [BioShock designer] Ken Levine or [Fable II designer Peter] Molyneux or [Demigod designer] Chris Taylor or [Metal Gear Solid designer Hideo] Kojima. I mean, we all need to celebrate these people," he asserted.
Bleszinski, who has his own fan following among hardcore gamers, appears not to be letting Internet Celebrity get to his head. Rather, the industry veteran wants to help games be marketed more effectively: "It absolutely is very much a team effort, and I'm nothing without the 100-plus people who worked on Gears, but if I can go out there and evangelize the game and help sell the vision of it, that's a very useful thing, and we're all able to put gas in our gas tanks as a result of it, right?"
The designer's recent work with a Gears of War Hollywood adaptation clearly provided a lot of inspiration for his comments. "As sad as it is, you're only as good as your last game, in many ways," he commented. "In Hollywood, at least, you get movie jail for like a year, and you're out, and you get to try and make another good movie. In games, you screw up once, and no one ever wants to hear from you again. It's pretty sad."
Hollywood may have also given Bleszinski some ideas on the day-to-day work of game development, as well. "It's a very structured, yet organic, process in Hollywood," he concluded, "where in games it's still the Wild Wild West in some ways right now."

Why couldn't Gabe Newell have been the guy to say this? Not that I particularly care, either way, but it seems like Cliffy's track record with certain gamers could undermine the message of what he wants to say.
It's also like he's trying to clean up his record with gamers in general; I don't like it when he rails on PC gaming, but I don't find an issue with his statement at all, and he gets a certain amount of respect from me for that.
I, personally, can't wait for Taylor's Demigod (I also love Total Annihilation, SupCom, and Forged Alliance), but the teams are just as integral to the overall game. At least, if this game wants to do well.

I think games are known far more for their title than the people who made them. Even when the entire team can leave and have nothing to do with a sequel. I learned the hard way with Myth III. With rights to names and franchises being passed around its hard to track down who really makes this stuff. I'm sure there are people who thought Rockband was a ripoff of Guitar Hero. If I didn't know Chris Taylor I never would have found Supreme Commander after being such a fan of Total Annihilation.
As for Cliffy B, hes a silly silly man. Although I can generally rely on his games being enjoyable and well made.

Party and play some Portal!
I'm familiar with all those names and then some. The gamers that are more interested than just playing these games, the ones that read up on the theory, buy "the making of" books, and spend hours on gaming forums should all be familiar with those figureheads.
Others just want entertainment and I suppose could not care less about who is the driving force behind the team.
We celebrate the designers by buying their games, if they're worth the 50-60 bucks. I suppose a big reason behind the claim: "In games, you screw up once, and no one ever wants to hear from you again. It's pretty sad," is that for the gamers, it's a much larger investment than a movie which is 10 bucks and 2 hours of your time.

But then again, I can't say I really know anyone spearheading the Pixar or Dreamworks teams, either.

To the actual issue, I sort of understand what he is getting at when he says you make one stinker and it is hard to rebound in the games industry compared to movies. Part of the problem is how game audiences are not as fan driven by individuals as much as a brands. Games are more commercial products- the reason why Diablo 3 has so much hype even though the original company who developed it is no more. I think it would be tough as hell to get people excited for Goodfellas 2 if Michael Bay took over the franchise instead of Scorcese. Fans want Scorcese, or Pitt, or Bale, etc. Games have brands.
So in that respect I agree with him even though he comes off appearing needy. My advice for him would be leaving the game industry and go into movies instead of trying to change the way the industry works.
