The Video Game Release List of 10/12 - 10/18

by Chris Faylor, Oct 11, 2008 9:59am PDT

This week's release list reminds you that, contrary to the bulk of the current Shacknews front page, there's more to the gaming industry than Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2.

If you're looking for a particular system, feel free to skip right to the PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP sections. Should you want to check out any past release lists, scope out our handy archive.

Barring any unforeseen delays, most of this week's games should be at North American retailers by Wednesday, October 15.

If available, more information can be found by clicking on a game's box or title.

  • Does anybody know why we've seen 1 week delays so often on PC releases lately? I could understand if it was a delay to finish stuff up or whatever...but then it wouldn't be a week delay. Hell it seems that usually stores are sitting on the PC boxes or they've been pressed in the same time frame as the console discs so it seems strange to have an artificial delay that only serves to hurt PC sales.

If I were of mind to imagine conspiracies everywhere I'd suggest it would be because of the fact that the PC release is usually 10 bucks cheaper or that there's a fear of piracy so they want as many people to get the harder to pirate versions earlier to get some assured sales (and though I see piracy as a grave concern for PC gaming...it seems like a self fulfilling prophecy where you're going to have less sales with a 1 week delay...which would make it harder to tell what caused your lack of sales). If I were really paranoid I'd suggest that companies like EA want to see PC gaming go the way of the dodo, and it fits their purposes to create situations that would drive people to the console versions over the PC. Now I don't buy those explainations (never attribute to malice what incompetence would easily explain), but I can't understand any sane reason for delaying the PC versions of games by one week.

On a side note; does Dead Space have a multiplayer component? I'm not sure what version I myself will get, I usually try to get the version I see as more suited to its platform (though I also try to support PC gaming in general since I value it greatly and want it to thrive...so I like voting for it with my dollars). But when multiplayer is a concern; I will get the PC version simply because I don't have good broadband available at home (I have satellite which has pings of 1000+ms, the other choice is dialup at 24k). I can play online games via public wireless access points (the shooting range I go to has one, as does the library)...so multiplayer games are generally PC for me, or I buy both console and PC versions if for some reason I prefer going that route (hell, I often buy two boxes of the PC version so I can play with my brother over our wireless network if its something that works with only 2 players).
