Is it just me or do the environments not look very good?

No, I agree. Think it's the texture work.

not just you, but it probably looks slightly better when moving through them at high speeds.

I was disappointed with the textures in the demo. They were VERY flat even when moving. The first game looked much better than this demo.

the demo was an old build. Why they released it...I dunno.

it'll probably look much better in motion...the first one didn't look so great standing still...but when there was cars ahead of you tearing up the ground and creating mud it was pretty swet

You are seeing the limitations of the texture memory of the PS3. They are storing more meshes and visual effects in memory for this game and the tradeoff is low res environment textures. You may have seen the Bioshock issue where side by side comparisons between PS3 and X360 do not paint a pretty picture. Same problem and not much that can be done about it due to the poor streaming performance of the BD drive.

When I googled it, it seems that the comparison shots were done between a PC using a 360 gamepad, and the PS3.
