by Steve Gibson, Oct 02, 2008 6:00pm PDT

I really hope for an uneventful debate tonight. Maybe just a little less flipping out

tomorrow. Probably not. :(

  • TERMINAL MAN SCENARIO

For the people that have a hard time not thinking about too-much stuff:

Let's pretend that there is a device, a small and unobtrusive patch, that you could place behind your ear like a motion-sickness patch (shadows of The Terminal Man) containing microelectronics and designed and programmed to monitor details like electrical brain activity heartrate and at a time of your choosing, administer tiny electric pulses to artificially reduce thinking about looping or recursive thoughts.

You know the thoughts, the ones that represent problems that have no solution, the ones that infest your mind like parasites and nest in your psyche, haunting your precious moments and robbing you of tranquility.

Obviously for some, medication is a possibility. For others, alcohol or drugs. Still more use therapy or meditation. All have varying degrees of success. This proposal, an electronic solution is for the 1-percenters, the demographic that would enjoy the benefits of peace of mind without pills or the time-wasting bothersome of it all.

Assuming a neurotransmitter can be duplicated by electric transmission, would you be open to trying a device that could alter the very thoughts you have in order to bring contentment?
