PlayStation 4 May Keep Cell Processor
by Blake Ellison, Sep 30, 2008 5:19pm PDT"Sony has begun considering in earnest using the Cell architecture for the PlayStation 4," says a report on Japanese-language site Impress Watch. The report goes on to say that Sony is currently seeking input from developers on the idea.
Using the Cell would cut production costs on the PS4--a much-needed step for Sony, which loses money on every console--and enable PlayStation 3 developers to more quickly produce games for the PlayStation 4. The PS3 is renowned among developers for its unconventional internal architecture, making game production more challenging.
According to the report, Sony had planned to continue using the Cell architecture after the PS3 since the system's conception. The PS4 may run on an enhanced version of the 45nm chip already in production for the PS3. The 45nm chip would reduce power consumption, as would the projected use of standard DDR RAM instead of XDR RAM.
Using more current hardware would also allow Sony to compete with Microsoft and Nintendo by getting the PS4 to market more quickly. Of course, Sony may stay competitive in processing power by adding more cores to the PS4 version of the processor.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer has already noted that the PS3's development cost $3 billion and would be apt to stop the PS4 from similarly draining money from Sony's coffers.

Or they could try and sell you the Xbox 3 & PS4 for $1000-1500 with brand new hardware, but I doubt many will sell. I think in the future we'll see more Wiis from all three sides as it simply does not pay to have expensive hardware which you have to sell at a low price. And going by this article the PS4 is the first Wii.
The future is not bright for hi-tech consoles, and right so, consoles should be kept simple and cheap for the consumer. Todays consoles can't even be called consoles anymore, well maybe the Wii.

If there was a solid support structure and good APIs developers wouldn't complain. They should focus on that first.

If Sony makes the right moves to solve the threading/symmetry problems, but still keeps the SPUs which make the Cell so interesting, they really could have a winner on their hands assuming the other cards are in place.
I'm beginning to think that this next console generation won't be as big of a jump as the last...Sony and Microsoft are both taking heed of Nintendo's strategy to print money. I'm betting both of their boxes will share a lot of DNA with the current ones.
Who knows what Nintendo will do. They'll probably make the Wii Too and every game gets a unique peripheral.

Loved that line, and I'm probably going to have on by the end of the year :)
One thing this makes you wonder though is if they are considering using near future parts that kinda makes you figure on seeing it out in the next couple of years. I guess the 10 year plan was due to inherent backwards compatibility of the replacement and expecting devs to still target the PS3 with games after the PS4 is out like they did with the PS2. I'm betting that won't go to plan.

The report goes on to say that Sony is begging developers, "You sure you cant dev on our CELL cpu, like absolutely sure.? We have kids to feed. We can't keep losing money on batteries on PS3's" /paraphrased.

It'll certainly help make the PS4 backwards compatible with the PS3.
