Metallica Drummer Responds to Retail-vs-Guitar Hero Sound Quality Feud
by Blake Ellison, Sep 30, 2008 1:14pm PDT"Listen, I can't keep up with this shit," complained Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich in response to the internet pointing out that the Guitar Hero III DLC version of the band's new album Death Magnetic is of better quality than the CD on store shelves.
Speaking to Blender, Ulrich sounded much more educated on the issue than he gave himself credit for. "You gotta remember, when we put out '...And Justice for All,' people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? ... It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now '...And Justice for All' is sort of the seminal Metallica record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands."
As for the new record, Ulrich defended album producer Rick Rubin who allegedly "compressed" the record, sacrificing sound quality for the sake of loudness. "Me and James [Hetfield, Metallica frontman] made a deal that we would hang back a little and not get in the way of whatever Rick's vision was. That's not to put it on him - it's our record, I'll take the hit, but we wanted to roll with Rick's vision of how Metallica would sound."
Perhaps the most vocal opponent of file-sharing among other music-related technology advances, Ulrich had more to say about internet users. "Part of being in Metallica is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride," he explained.

I hate Lars. I don't care for his drumming, I don't care for his whining and bitching, and I think he is a total idiot.
I might be the only one that feels this way, but I don't care.

And that was their mistake. I wouldn't let a producer take the band's vision and do whatever he wanted with it.

If the difference between the two recordings bugs you that much you need to be checked for OCD.

I'd also add that there seems to be a fine line between too "loud"/compressed and "I can't fucking hear the thing"...with Luciferion's Demonication or Hecate Enthroned's The Slaughter Of Innocence on the just a tiny bit too low/quit side and Death Magnetic on the other end of the spectrum.

As far as i'm concerned, they stopped being a decent band the day that Enter Sandman debuted worldwide on MTV. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing that day because of the Epic WTF all my friends were screaming at the TV.
They've had a few decent songs between then and now, but as far as an entire album being worth buying like their first four (five technically if u want to count the garage days ep)... no chance.
I was around back when Kill 'em all was still "Metal up your ass" before it got "censored". That was Metallica as I remember them. This new album.. the music is good - up until James starts "singing".

The worst thing is.. (having spent money on both the coffin box and the regular cd version) - that I'd be willing to spend money yet again for a re-mix / remaster.

I agree the GH3 version sounds better, but am I wrong for preferring the CD version? I mean, louder albums do sell better for a reason.

It's almost impossible to find rock, metal, or pop music that isn't compressed to shit.
