Steam Begins Offering Mod Downloads This Week

Expanding the breadth of its online PC digital distribution platform Steam, creator Valve has announced that it will begin offering free downloads of user-created mods.

Playable so long as a user has a Source-powered game installed--such as Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2 or The Orange Box--the mods will appear under the My Games listing, and will receive automatic updates like any other Steam release.

The initial batch of mods slated to arrive this week are:

Age of Chivalry
D.I.P.R.I.P.
Insurgency
Synergy
Zombie Panic

In addition to automatic updates, the mods will incorporate other aspects of Valve's Steamworks toolset, with the company promising that this will result in "stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community."

I'm kind of surprised Dystopia isn't on this list. I faded out of the community a while ago but it seemed like it was going strong, really fun unique gameplay. Anybody know if it's still going strong or what?

Shame there is no amazing mods for HL2, Insurgency probably the best one there rest just rubbish really.

i miss the HL1, UnrealT and Q3 mod days :(

Anyone know if that Fortress Forever mod is any good, and has any full servers? I've been interested, but find myself stalling each time I think of downloading it since it might be a mod with no people playing it, and thus the <5 minute download will be a waste. Yes, time is precious, no I don't have enough of it, and yes 5 minutes is a lot.

Nice I had outdated versions of Insurgency and Zombie Panic installed for some time now.. and I am too lazy to update them. This will give me a reason to play them again :p

I wonder if they'll eventually give support to some HL1 mods? Natural Selection, Action Half-Life, and Brainbread spring to mind.
