by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 28, 2008 7:40am PDTWelcome my gaming brothers and sisters. How is your weekend?
I spent a portion of the weekend playing through Max Payne 1 & 2 again courtesy of that Steam deal. I have the original CDs around here somewhere, but at only a few bucks for both I didn't quite care. Both games are still great fun. Puzzling that Rockstar hasn't come out with a third one.
Also saw Tropic Thunder last night as it finally premiered here in the Netherlands on Thursday. Really quite funny. Generally not the biggest fan of Ben Stiller as writer and director, but he did a great job here.

So, now the wiring guy is grinning ear to ear and eager for me to sign the $3,000 Exhibit B to put a few network jacks, cable jacks, and home theatre prewiring in my house, which itself is a far cry from the fully wired masterpiece I had planned.
1.) Is it a complete pain to put in extra cable/network jacks after drywall? if I run cable up to the attic, then over and down through an interior wall to a box, is it a major hassle, or just a bit more than if I had been able to do this pre-drywall?
1b.) If the floorplan for the bottom floor doesn't line up with the top (i.e. walls that don't extend through both floors) is it possible or a PITA to get a wire into that wall after drywall is up? Does this queston make sense?
2.) Is it even possible to do home theatre wiring after drywall without ripping stuff out?

Mount and Blade + Rome / Empire Total War would be fucking epic. I want to be the first guy over that wall to face those Carthaginians or the captain on a Spanish galleon both in first person.
SSX + Crysis engined huge mountains would be pretty sweet too.

If you are looking for a really good game to download from the app store I can't recommend Real Soccer 09 enough. Instead of doing the usual tilt function of most of the games available for the iTouch / iPhone it instead puts a directional pad and A + B buttons right on the screen.
Here's a video of the game in action: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/263547.html
It takes some getting used to but once you play it awhile the controls being very easy to use. The graphics are amazing and the game has stunning depth for a phone game. The sound is exceptional. It isn't buggy. It's by far the best game I've downloaded from the app store.
It's 10 dollars but worth every penny in my opinion. Check it out.

Armageddon - Nuke an incoming asteroid to save the earth.
The Core - Nuke the earth's core to get it started again.
Sunshine - Nuke the sun to get it started again.
Scorcher - Nuke the earth's plates to stop them from causing devastating earthquakes.

I have to say, this "work from home" thing is pretty alright. Also, it gives me a tasty incentive to improve the lay out of my "man room" to accommodate an actual work space. The only downside is that I need to either setup a camera/mic system for my gaming PC or take my 2003 Server out of tomb stone mode and make it a whole new desktop.
Spiritualized on Friday night was the sound of Adam and Eve having baby-making sex in the back row of a church in Atlanta Georgia while a gospel choir practiced for Sunday's performance. Oh yeah, the sermon is about how Heroin is good becomes it comes from the Almighty.
I'm so glad the city finally returned to normal after IKE, because I can finally finish Crysis.
I enjoy Chicago beer. Chicago style pizza on the other hand, not so much.

Bomberman Blast ($10) - 8 players online :D
Orbient (port of Orbital, which was a Bit Generation Game) - "Players start off as the smallest body in a solar system, and must use the gravity of the other bodies to move around (pressing the A button to attract towards objects and pressing the B button to repel off them) to collide with the next largest body, combining to create one larger body. This is repeated until the player captures the sun in the solar system. The player then moves on to the next level."

So I'm 40 years late for the party, but wow, what a mindfuck of a film! I read the book last week and just watched the movie. I'm really really glad I did in that order. The book made a lot more sense and had a lot more detail. Especially everything that happens post-Jupiter (Saturn in the book). In the movie, once Dave gets to Jupiter it's pretty much just tripping acid till the credits.
In the book there was a wonderful tour of the universe and it was well explained that Dave was the first human to prove to the 'monolith' that humanity had reached the developmental stage at which the highest level beings in the universe were willing to share some of their understanding and knowledge with us.
I think I would have absolutely hated the movie had I seen it in the theaters when it originally came out, mostly due to the non-ending.

aww, now i wish i hadnt just watched that.
I don't mean consumer electronics, I mean electronics, soldering and capacitors and stuff. I was looking at getting into this as a hobby, possibly even a degree. (I'm trying to decide between this and computer science at the moment, since the school I'm checking out has a shitty CS course....and both subjects are equally interesting to me.) I have a few questions though.
Is there a "Newegg" for electronic components? The only place in town to find this crap is Radio Shack and if their other stuff is anything to judge them by I'm sure they are horrifically overpriced.
What do I need to start small scale stuff? I'm thinking just a breadboard, some components, and a multimeter to get into the theory stuff. Probably don't even need to get a soldering iron yet.
And lastly - when I do get into soldering stuff - I've heard that leaded solder "works" better than lead free...but there's no way in hell I'm risking my health for a slightly better connection. What's your opinions here? Also on the lines of safety - what do you guys think of this "Cold Heat" iron that I'm seeing everywhere? (I'm assuming you all hate it because it isn't old school enough, or it makes crappy connections, but hey surprise me.)
I do have a bit of experience from my amateur radio days, but that was for a few years back when I was 8-12. I need to get reacquainted.
