Fable 2 Not Entirely Done: Online Co-op in Patch
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 28, 2008 7:42am PDTEven though Fable 2 has gone gold, development is not entirely complete according to Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog.Though singleplayer and local co-operative play will work fine out of the box, online co-op is still being worked on.
The blog post mentions that developer Lionhead Studios is shooting for a title update to be released within a week of launch. Until the patch hits, "as you are playing through the game, you will still be able to see your friends as glowing orbs as well as chat and trade with them."The Xbox 360 exclusive RPG sequel will be in stores October 21.

It used to be this big advantage that console games had to be finished before they shipped. Since patches are possible on the PC, it became this common practice on the PC to go ahead and ship a game that was incomplete or knowingly buggy, then ship a patch as soon as the game was out, or as soon as was possible.
When consoles started shipping with hard drives, the first thing people pointed out was that now this practice might spread to the consoles. Sure, patching a game because of security holes or things that would be difficult or impossible do diagnose in online gaming without a critical mass of players is an advantageous thing - I think the first Xbox (1) game to be patched was Unreal Championship.
But now we've come full circle and game developers have decided to go ahead and ship a game with a missing feature, knowing full well that they can just patch it in later.
Now in this particular case it's probably not a big deal - the feature is probably not listed on the box and the feature itself - online co-op - requires getting online anyway. But this is a slippery slope and we're now seeing one more of the advantages of consoles - that the game must be right the first time because features cannot be patched in - going away.

I just care about a game working as intended right away when I buy a copy.
Am I the only one feeling this way?
If its a question about whether or not I'm going to spend money on a product.. then these things definitely matter to me.

Is the game going to be good? I don't know much about Fable but I would love a Zelda type game with co-op

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me with a bunch of interviews about what's going to be in my games, shame on me and the rest of the suckers.
"Unfortunately, you won't really have any fun with these orbs. They'll serve as more of a reminder of the functionality you don't have. We hate you."

Besides, I'd gladly pay 60$ just for the single player.
