Warhammer Online Nets 500K Players in First Week, Becomes 'Fastest-Selling New MMO' Ever

by Chris Faylor, Sep 26, 2008 7:50am PDT

Since the official launch of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (PC) on September 18, more than half a million players have registered to play the Mythic-developed massively multiplayer role-playing game, the studio announced today.

According to the company, this makes Warhammer Online "the fastest-selling new MMO of all time," with studio VP Mark Jacobs adding that "the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG."

The last high-profile PC MMO release, Funcom's Age of Conan, netted 400K players in the week following its May launch. Funcom later claimed that Conan was "the biggest MMO launch since World of Warcraft," a record that Mythic appears to be closing in on.

  • It is a great game! I love it...

For all the neighsayers out there, let it grow. Just like ANY OTHER MMORPG ... it takes 1 year to grow to its full potential...

Honestly, coming from Guildwars and Lord of the Rings Online, it is fresh for its PvP and PQs... I am honoring the developers and their hard work and trying it out. Take it for what it is... and enjoy its unique design... less crafting... more action... more social war band madness... The world really does feel alive to me ... I may give it a year... it is a nice compliment to LOTRO which PvP isn't its strong point (yet).

Sorry guys... I have to get back to finding the Ring and WAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHH!!!

  • I'm loving it. Here's my short WoW comparison:

Things I liked better about WoW:
    Art and Presentation
-WAR still looks very good, but WoW's Art, Sound, and Colors appealed to me more. WAR has a much darker palette, the animations aren't great, and in general I think WoW did an awesome job at making beautiful looking models (even with their low poly-count). WAR doesn't quite get to this level, but after a while it starts to grow on you. I do miss WoW's almost seamless world. The flights across WoW's landscape could at times be pretty breathtaking.
-PvE? It's hard to say at this point, really, how well the PvE stacks up. I'm not talking about Grinding to the max level, I'm talking about end-game PvE. WoW did that quite well, I'm not sure how WAR's will compare. It does sound like even end-game PvE is in some ways tied to PvP, so that should add an interesting dynamic.
-System Requirements. WAR needs dual cores and a decent video card to run smoothly. It's not surprising given it is a newer game, but those with slower systems will want to upgrade.

Things I like better about WAR:
-Leveling from the beginning doing PvP is not only doable but as fast or faster than PvE. And the PvP is fun. It certainly gives you a great alternative to the usual grind.
-Class mechanics. WAR allows for a LOT more flexibility in class specialization than WoW. There's gear and a similar "Tree" structure like WoW has, but there are also two other forms of specialization: "Tactics" and "Morale abilities". Both of these are configurable before entering battle, and are "free" to reconfigure as often as you like. You just choose a subset from those available to you. Tactics are usually passive buffs, while morale abilities are powerful spells you can use in battle and consume "morale". Morale is built up by being in combat, and the more you build up the more powerful spells you are able to use. It's a very fun mechanic.
-Class balance: Despite the huge amount of specialization available, at least so far the classes (in a group setting) are very well balanced. No one class dominates, they all have their uses. Some are certainly on the underpowered side, but overall its quite impressive.
-World PvP. There are objectives for world PvP everywhere, besides the normal instanced combat.
-PvP itself is much "slower" in the sense that it takes longer to kill people, especially if they are being healed. Because you can't insta-kill people it means the healers actually have time to respond, and in general means there is actually some strategy to it all (focusing fire, taking out healers, using spells to reduce healing, etc).
-Server management. WoW had some pretty terrible queue lines, sometimes as much as 30min. Even though I am on one of the most populated servers, the worst I've had is a 5min wait.
