EA Declares Spore A Hit: Over 1 Million Copies Sold, More Than 25 Million Creatures Uploaded

Maxis' chart-topping evolution simulator Spore has sold over a million units since it was released on PC, Mac and Nintendo DS earlier this month, publisher EA revealed today.

Sales were not broken down by platform, which will undoubtedly lead to more arguments regarding the game's controversial copy protection. However, EA noted that over 25 million user-made creatures have been uploaded to the Sporepedia--a feature only available in the PC and Mac release of Spore and the Creature Creator.

"Spore is a hit," declared EA Games president Frank Gibeau. "Will Wright's latest delivers an incredibly diverse game that appeals to casual gamers and the core alike. We're off to a great start moving into the holiday season and believe Spore will deliver a platform of creativity for gamers of all stripes for years to come."

The first sign of trouble is declaring your own game a hit. When a game is a hit - everyone except the author is declaring it so. The second sign is selling only a million. For a PC game that is 'good', but not near ground breaking. However it's worse than that because it appears (I could be wrong) that it's across all platforms. A million on any console isn't a hit. A million on DS is insignificant compared to what the goal would have been for an install based that large. Halo3 sold more than that out the gate and it's not considered a hit if you read the latest NPD console sales report for 2008 that appeared here a day or so ago.

So... when do you think the rest of the game developers will take a hint, stop blaming things on pirates, pick fights with actual consumers, and develop a genuinely unique and good idea players will like?
