Report: Mass Effect Movie Rights Bought by Marvel Movie Man
by Blake Ellison, Sep 18, 2008 5:00pm PDTFilm producer Avi Arad has bought the film rights to Bioware's cinematic Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect, according to a report today.
"Numerous sources have confirmed that producer Avi Arad has optioned the rights," reads the report on The Cut Scene. Arad is also producing the Lost Planet movie with his new production company.
Electronic Arts, publisher of Mass Effect and owner of the intellectual property, declined to comment on the report, but the development would fit with the company's plan to generate revenue by way of Hollywood and TV tie-ins.
Arad, who brought Marvel comic book franchises like X-Men, Spider-Man and Iron Man to the silver screen, has yet to attach a director, screenplay writer, or any stars to the adaptation, if he indeed has purchased the rights.

It's like referencing Steve Jobs in a story by saying he's a computer salesman.

The game is already extremely cinematic. I'm not convinced making a movie out of it is going to bring anything worthwhile to the table.

The problem is, the game was basically knights of the old republic 3 and there are a lot of ideas borrowed from other sci-fi, so the movie is gonna have to be exceptionally good
They will have to be carefull making the movie if they follow game storyline. Like who they choose to sacrifice after the first Saren fight, if they'll kill off Wrex, or if they'll make Sheperd a Paragon or a Renegade.

but it's pretty generic sci fi fare though.

Mass Effect was one giant collection plate of ideas, cliches and tropes taken from many science fiction films and books released in the last 20 years.
There really wasn't all that much original in it. Playing through the game, I was struck at how many times I thought "Oh they took this idea from here," or "Oh they took the look of this alien from that."
I guess it makes sense that Hollywood would make a movie out of it, because of straightforwardly popcorn movie-friendly it all is.
