Morning Chatty: Warhammer Online Launch Edition
by Chris Faylor, Sep 18, 2008 5:20am PDTAround these parts, the whole industry seems to pretty much stop working when a major game launches, slowing the news cycle to, well, almost nothing. The news lull that followed Grand Theft Auto IV was one of the worst I've ever seen.
I bring this up because Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning officially launches today. Mythic's been working on that PC MMO for quite some time, and I know many have been anticipating it. Whether it leads to a news drought or not, that probably isn't indicative of much--pre-order customers have been able to play for a while now--but it's something that's on my mind today.
Well, that and the Mirror's Edge release date: November 11 for consoles. I've been looking forward to the game since I first saw it at GDC, and it certainly didn't disappoint when I played it at E3, so here's hoping...

AMODA's 44th Digital Showcase is a celebration of video games and the art that they inspire. Renown musicians and visual artists will congregate at Club DeVille on September 20th to display art or perform music they have created using video game hardware, music, graphics or coding.
Two musicians from New York's 8bitpeoples collective will headline the event. Nullsleep and Bit Shifter create their music using the Nintendo Gameboy and other retro video game equipment. The event will also feature live video art by New York-based artist Voltage Controlled, who uses video game hardware to generate his live visual performance.
some cool 8-bit bands, art, video games, and probably drunk chicks who like video games and furries.

The first round would be round robin format using match play rules. Each player would play every other entrant on either a course the two players agree on or we could set something up to randomly assign courses to each specific match up. After the first round is completed the players with the four best records would play together in the final using normal stroke play on Wolf Creek a pre-determined course. I suppose if there is a tie we can use margin of victory as a tie-breaker maybe?
Deathlove also suggested a third round which entailed a balloon race around the world but I just don’t think that’s really feasible at the moment, so we'll stick to strictly golfing. So who all might be interested in participating?

Love steam but this sucks. Im scared all my games will be gone. Sent a ticket last night but no word yet.
Oh, and I know most people here won't play it, but Crysis Wars, the multiplayer component of the game, is so unbelievably fun. The closest analog is a Battlefield game, only the graphics are superb and you can super sprint or cloak or jump over the guy in the jeep who's trying to run you down and land behind him and shoot up the external gas can and explode him. And there's way more strategy to the game because you have to keep moving around the battlefield and capturing energy and spawn points while maintaining control of the Prototype Factory. The only bad thing about it, I mean the ONLY bad thing about it is that CoD4 and TF2 are both really good multiplayer games too. If this game had come out 6 months before either of those I have no doubt there'd be a lot more people playing it.
And I think they did make the engine just a bit more efficient. I have a quad core and an 8800GT, what I'd consider a Lower Upper Class gaming rig, and I'm running it at 1440x900 with everything at medium (no AA) in DX9 mode and it looks amazing and has an excellent, stable framerate. I ran it briefly at a lower res in DX10, and it looked amazinger, but I'd rather have the higher res an framerate. Besides, this game on medium quality still looks better than anything else on the market.

(Sorry it is late--I was waiting for evening chatty, but alas it never came.)
I'm trying to get a bunch of tv episodes copied from DVD to memory sticks. I've got Handbrake working like a charm on my Mac, but it's an old PowerBook, so encoding is VERY SLOW, typically 200-300% of the duration of the video being encoded. I'd like to speed this up by also doing encoding on my PC, which is much beefier... but Handbrake just chokes when I point it at a DVD. It pops up this little dialog that says the CLI is scanning the DVD and then does nothing. About 20% of the time, it will recover from that and tell me that no titles were found on the DVD.
So: does anyone have experience with Handbrake in Windows? Or is there something better I should use? DVDFab worked before, but it expired and I don't feel like paying $70 for the full version.

it fixes itself if you force the service off and back on, but the problem here is that it inexplicably stops working.
shouldn't it work indefinitely without sysadmin intervention?

Last month, Rachel Bird exchanged vows with Gideon Codding in a church wedding in front of family and friends. As far as Bird is concerned, she is a bride.
To the state of California, however, she is either "Party A" or "Party B."
Those are the terms that have replaced "bride" and "groom" on the state's new gender-neutral marriage licenses. And to Bird and Codding, that is unacceptable.
"We are traditionalists – we just want to be called bride and groom," said Bird, 25, who works part time for her father's church. "Those words have been used for generations and now they just changed them."
[...]
"We just feel that our rights have been violated," she said.
And disingenuous.
