Deus Ex Designer Making 'Immersive First-Person RPG'

39
Harvey Smith, lead designer on Deus Ex: Invisible War (PC), is at work on an "immersive first-person RPG" title.

Speaking at the Austin Game Developers Conference, Smith commented that his studio "Arkane ... is very focused on immersive first-person experiences," giving players an idea of what to expect from the Austin, Texas, office's future projects.

"My focus is very much around games like Deus Ex," said Smith in the speech as noted by Gamasutra. Smith worked on the original Deus Ex under famed game designer Warren Spector in addition to Thief: Deadly Shadows and System Shock.

The true continuation of the Deus Ex series, on the other hand, is in the works at Eidos Montreal and should be revealed soon.

Before ALL the shit talking - yes DX2 was disapointing....but I'll welcome ANY game in this style

I do as well. DX2's worse offense was that it followed one of the greatest games ever made. There are so few good fps/rpg hybrids that I'm more than willing to be open-minded about this one.

I agree. I'll keep an open mind for anything that strays away from the waves of generic shooters out there.

I can name only 2 supurb fps/rpg hybrids: Deus Ex, and System Shock 2. Dark Messiah doesn't really count too much, since it's much more a fps game, but its melee system should be in every game that plans to include a melee combat.

Mass Effect, Tron 2.0, Ultima Underworld 1 + 2, Vampires 2 (although I'm not a big fan of that one)

Tron 2.0 had rpg elements? Thought it was a shooter through and through.

TRON 2.0 more than the other Monolith FPSs, but ever since NOLF2 each have included collectible upgrades hidden throughout the levels.

Completely agree, i have great expectations both for DX 3 and this game. Deus Ex is of course the most fantastic game ever made - i have not played anything since that felt as interesting and exciting throughout the game, i love it! Just completed it for the 8th time a couple of months ago :D Playing throuh DX2 now :)

I don't know how.. but I somehow missed Deus Ex back in the day. I just recently bought it off Steam a few months ago and I am totally blown away by it. It is an old game now... but it did some things in that game which STILL haven't been done as well in modern games.

As I'm playing it actually I was thinking how much Doom3 ripped off it's diary and log systems from this game. Stuff like "I had to change the lock combination to 4434.." etc... is right from Deus Ex.

Yes. Thank you. I'm quite willing to give him a chance, I think he's had a rough ride.
