Crysis and Crysis Warhead Head to Steam

As the September 16 release of Crytek's sci-fi shooter Crysis Warhead (PC) approaches, Valve and Crytek today announced that both Warhead and the original Crysis will soon be sold through Valve's digital distribution client Steam.

Said to go up for pre-order this weekend, Crysis and Crysis Warhead are slated to hit Steam by mid September. No price points were provided.

Faylor's Take: Opening up Crysis and Crysis Warhead to the Steam audience is a smart move for Crytek, especially given the low overheads of digital distribution.

However, don't get too excited about the idea of Crysis publisher EA bringing its major games to Steam. As with Valve's own The Orange Box, Crysis and Crysis Warhead are published through the EA Partners program. Going by the announcement's wording, the Steam debut of Crysis seems to be more of a Valve and Crytek, not EA, thing.

just as i cancelled my crysis preorder with EA downoader a year ago and bought the retail copy (With the almost 5 mins DVD Drive spin uptime protection) im cancelling this on EA downloader too and ill get the steam copy.

I don't think EA had anything to do with this. It says right when you start Crysis that it's owned by Crytek. Since Crytek isn't owned by EA, I don't think EA could stop this even if they wanted to.

I wish this wasn't a risky venture. I want the game ASAP, and I fear they will delay the steam unlock or some other SNAFU will pop up. Do I go for the sure fire physical copy or the risky but easier steam version?

They really need to clear up doubts about the release date first.

I've been meaning to run through Crysis again every since I was just messing around with it on my laptop the other day...it really is fun to fuck around with the AI...I literally had hours and hours of fun with the demo just trying different things.

Hell, it was my favorite game of 2007 and that was a really tough call given all the amazing stuff that came out (so yeah, I'm looking forward to Warhead along with all the other great stuff this year...C:WH should give me quite a bit of playtime for my money).

You sure about that? The Crysis box sports a huge EA logo as does the mockups I've seen of Crysis Warhead, whereas The Orange Box shows just Valve logos.

Is this EA Partners bit a new thing or has it been there all along and EA just put their logo on the box this time? Or am I just way off on what the EA Partners thing means?

Also - please let us associate our keys for the original Crysis with Steam...

Is this going to hit Sept 16 globally, or will the ROW package get it a weak later. The STEAM page is ambigious, "Mid september" which may reflect how they completely messed up with Clear Sky date or how they will not release simultaneously.

HELL YES! Was considering getting C: W off Direct2Drive b/c I refuse to use EA Downloader given its extremely stiff terms, but Steam would be even better. As a college student who already has a box filled with games, additional boxes are increasingly not an option really.

This is good news only if it means that by purchasing Warhead through Steam means there wont be any limits imposed on how many times you can install the game.

I would hope that any agreement that Crytek has made with Valve supersedes any and all forms of copy protection methods implemented by EA.

Every third party game I've had on steam had problems. Mainly slow to update compared to if you just bought the box and downloaded the patch. But it is so darn convenient that I'm tempted anyway.
