NPD: Madden, Wii Games Lead August

A trio of versions of Madden NFL 09 filled the top three at US retailers across August, sales-tracking firm NPD Group revealed today. Also coming in strong were Nintendo's first-party Wii offerings, including Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii.

The top ten console games from August, according to NPD, were:

Madden NFL 09 (EA Tiburon, Xbox 360) - 1,000,000
Madden NFL 09 (EA Tiburon, PlayStation 3) - 643,000
Madden NFL 09 (EA Tiburon, PlayStation 2) - 424,500
Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 394,900
Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii) - 328,700
Wii Play (Nintendo, Wii) - 200,200
Soul Calibur IV (Project Soul, Xbox 360) - 174,000
Too Human (Silicon Knights, Xbox 360) - 168,200
Madden NFL 09 (EA Tiburon, Wii) - 115,800
Guitar Hero: On Tour (Vicarious Visions, Nintendo DS) - 111,200

Meanwhile, August hardware sales in the United States were as follows:

Nintendo DS - 518,300 units
Wii - 453,000 units
PSP - 253,000 units
Xbox 360 - 195,200 units
PlayStation 3 - 185,400 units
PlayStation 2 - 144,100 units

The video games industry proved itself worth a grand total of $1.08 billion in the month of August, marking a 9% increase over August of last year.

It is worth remembering that the recent Xbox 360 price cut took effect in September, leaving August sales of the console unaffected. This week's 600% sales spike will be recorded in September's results.

I'm really interested to see what they do with a Too Human sequel. Poor sales might have outright killed it or led them to do more drastic changes. But with strong sales, I wonder how much they'll change?

I've played it heavily since it shipped and I must say I really enjoy it. However, they game is full of just...really frustrating design decisions. It's not buggy really (some bugs sure).

Anybody else play it around here? Thoughts?

  i found it a lot of fun. played sp and coop and liked both. hoping they include 4 player mp next time : dantastic

Interesting data. Hard to use Madden as a judge of overall sales numbers due to American Football being rather unpopular in non US territories, but an almost 2:1 ratio is hard for any publisher to ignore. The pathetic showing on Wii is a bit confusing though. Did it get bad reviews or something? What about SoulCal 4 on PS3? Thought that would be big in most territories but it doesn't even show on the charts. Also interesting is the number of consoles sold. With the wide knowledge that there would be a price cut on the 360 the next month, it still outsold the PS3. With the huge boost in sales after the price cut this is going to put more than a crimp in Sony's Style.

Too Human (Silicon Knights, Xbox 360) - 168,200

Not to shabby. I'm not sure what their goal was but that's pretty respectable. Then again, even if that game sold a million units every month for a year it couldn't recoup the 10 year investment of time and money they put in it.
