Project Origin Renamed F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, Arriving February 10

The sequel to Monolith's spooky shooter F.E.A.R. will now be known as F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin instead of plain old Project Origin. Furthermore, the game will hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 10, 2009, according to IGN.

Though Monolith created the first F.E.A.R., the sequel was not going to use the brand name as Vivendi owned the title while Monolith held the rights to its characters and settings.

That changed today as Monolith and owner Warner Bros. revealed that they had purchased the F.E.A.R. brand from Activision Blizzard, recently formed from the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games. The conglomerate has previously stated its intent to only retain a handful of Vivendi properties, leaving a number of projects in limbo.

It was the right thing to do. But I prefer just Project Origin in the title. The full title has potential to sell more copies on the shelf tho.

Yes, yes it is, the most worthless of the already worthless Project _____ game names. Fear 2: Shitty Subtitles is still a lot, lot better and "fits" again.

It just fit the game world nicely. If someone asked you what game you were playing and said Project Origin, I would agree that sounds pretty lame.

The other two "runner up" names were even worse.

Personally, I thought "P.I.E. (paranormal investigation experts.)" was the best.

Smartest move the industry has done in a while. I know Monolith is full of talented people and I'm always looking forward to their next project but I do believe having a FEAR 2 and Project Origin on the shelf would confuse the hell outta some people that don't follow gaming news as strictly. This will potentially lead to bigger sales and definitely more awareness, does that mean Starbreeze Studios scrapped their "FEAR 2"?

Starbreeze were ever doing one? I thought the rumoured title from them was Sys Shock 3 since they signed to EA?

Project Origin is a good name imo. However, when FEAR 2 is added as a subtitle, it sounds worse, although more informative. I suppose we'll have less "wut, this this teh sequel 2 fear?" stuff now.
