Resident Evil 5 Controls Get Gears-ish Overhaul
by Blake Ellison, Sep 03, 2008 4:41pm PDTCapcom's survival horror / action Resident Evil series has sometimes been known for unconventional control schemes, but the fifth time might be the charm.
The newest entry in the series will feature a control scheme inspired by Epic's successful Xbox 360 shooter Gears of War, as reported by Kotaku.
The feature wouldn't be the first one for Resident Evil 5 to be borrowed from its chainsaw-wielding, gore-fest cousin. The sequel will also sport 2-player, drop-in / drop-out co-operative play, and Gears' trademark cover system.
The now Gears-esque Resident Evil will debut on March 19, 2009 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I'm one of the few who has no real complaints about any RE game's controls; once the series added the autoaim function upon aiming (RE2, I think? Maybe 3?) everything felt just right. RE4's controls weren't restrictive, but rather, I felt they lent themselves to a more claustrophobic feeling: it was tricky to escape from hordes of not-zombies when your back was against the wall, but not tricky because of the controls - tricky because you had your back against a wall and were facing a handful or more of enemies who wanted to eat your face.
RE4's control scheme evolved just enough to sprinkle some action flavor into the survival horror pacing without the series become one emphasizing action. RE4 was still scary, perhaps even more so than its predecessors. I just hope that RE5 stirs in only enough action to perfect the RE4 experience, which it seems is Capcom's intent.
Still a launch day purchase, though.

I thought Resi 4's controls were fine to be honest, although dodging and navigating some parts were rendered comically stupid by not being able to sidestep.

RE4 was an excellent game marred by a horrible control scheme. yes, please assault me with numerous justifications (pacing, game design, suspense and atmosphere) but essential it boiled down to trying to negotiate zombie apocalypse as a drunk paraplegic with downs. and an inner ear infection.
