Mirror's Edge Gets Exclusive PS3 DLC

17
Reversing the trend of Xbox 360-exclusive downloadable content in multi-platform games, Sony has revealed that EA DICE's parkour-inspired first-person action game Mirror's Edge (PC, PS3, 360) will sport some PlayStation 3-only DLC.

"Exclusive downloadable content will be offered on the PlayStation Network," Sony Computer Entertainment informed Eurogamer. "PlayStation has an exclusive marketing agreement with EA regarding the title."

No details were offered as to what that content will be. DICE previously told Shacknews that the PS3 version of the Unreal Engine 3-powered game was leading development.

The title now opposes Bethesda's Fallout 3 and Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto IV in the brewing DLC conflict of 2008, with GTA4 receiving exclusive DLC on the Xbox 360 and Fallout 3 getting PC and 360-only downloadable content.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I have both consoles but this trend needs to die.

Agreed... you think they could make more money by releasing DLC on both platforms, although I suppose Sony + MS pay through the nose for exclusivity.

Agreed. It's really hurting gamers. Competition is suppose to help the consumers, right?

It does help us, our wallets get lighter therefore less strain on legs...unless you use cards for everything....

There's no reason DLC can't come out for both platforms. It's just some sinister plot to drain already slim wallets of their much enjoyed monetary girth.

There's a perfectly good reason for it not to. Sony and Microsoft is using it as a way to make sure you buy the game for THEIR system, thus helping them establish themselves as The Choice for multiplatform games which helps grow their online community across all games which in turn helps them sell more systems ("well, all my friends got it and I want to play with them") which then makes their platform more attractive to those developers who only want to develop for one platform and/or focus primarily on one platform.

It's all about the big console war. DICE/EA probably wants everyone to be able to buy the DLC, but if they can get enough money to make it exclusive that it's more (or roughly as much) profitable to make it exclusive, then it's less work for them and just as much money (or more).

Money. Sorry, I should have said, no good reason.

But it is a good reason. For them. Bad for us, perhaps, but it's a very good reason for them. :)

Everybody's fighting to get their hands in your back pocket. Sure, it's probably good buisness sense to get people to buy the xbox / ps3 but something about seems wrong to me.
