Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Aug 29, 2008 3:53am PDTGood morning Shackers, your Friday looking good? Good. So EA isn't so happy with the used game situation, I'm not really sure how much consumers will appreciate their plight however. Speaking of plights, analysts don't think Warner Music has much of a chance of raising the cost of game-licensed songs. And Crytek wants you to know they're still grumpy about pirates. But hey, how about some explosions?

Every now and then a game comes along that really tries its very best to push the edge of current technology and game mechanics. AITD5 could have been
that game. Its graphics are crisp and clean, even running in a lower resolution on the PC. Fire looks breath taking, and their fire propigation is the
best currently out there. There are interesting game dynamics. Being able to pick up just about every object you could reasonably pick up is pretty cool. Same with lighting objects on fire. I spent a good while just running (if you can call what your character does running) around picking stuff up and burning it. It was the pyro at heart in me. The whole fire extinguisher dynamic is really great.
The first..and maybe only "Wow...cool!" moment in the game for me, was when I first picked up a gun and then right away faced a locked door. I figured
there would be a few ways I could handle it. The fire extinguisher sitting in the corner could be used to smash the door. Maybe lighting the door itself on fire would work?. I chose to shoot at the lock. I honestly didn't think it would work, but to my great joy the lock area of the door shattared into the most beautiful shower of splinters, and the door swung open. That was really cool.
However, with all that praise...
I can't control the character.
I've used a mouse+keyboard to control every game I've played. I had no problems controling Assassins Creed with a keyboard, which also got a lot of
complaints, but this game takes the cake for worst controls ever. It's not even that their complicated, their not. Their basic game controls, but they
don't function.
In third person, the move keys are almost painful to use. I can't count how many times I jumped off a ledge and had to climb back up because of the dodgy
controls. The movement problem can be slightly solved by going into first person mode, but then your character seems to move painfully slow, and no
matter how much you fiddle with the mouse sensitivity its never quite responsive enough. Turning to try and shoot is a dodgy effort at best.
The inventory system is a wonderfully creative idea. Being able to combine almost anything and create your own makeshift weapons is really cool. The
system however, has a fatal flaw. The game doesn't pause when you open your inventory. So if you want to combine things, or equip some new stuff, you
need to run for cover, which mind you, doesnt last long sometimes, as a lot of the objects in game are totally destroyable. It also took me a few
chapters to figure out just how to make things work. How exactly to use multiple items in concert was a challange. A welcome challange most of the
time...most of the time.
Alone is also a puzzle game. One scene that stuck out for me, and I'm quite embarrassed to tell this story. I had quite a time trying to complete the bit
where you are dangling from the side of a building. I had to quick load a bunch of times to actually figure out what I'm suppose to do. Not only that,
but the sequence that leads up to that seems broken, where its totally random if you hang on and survive or fall to your flat death.
I tried to like Alone. I really really tried. I even went in telling myself to try and think of it as a horror adventure game with a combat mechanic, not
a 3rd person shooter/survival horror game/FPS, because adventure games always have their quarks. No dice here. The awful clunky controls, lack of
explanation of basic interactions, and broken puzzles have made Alone the quickest game to ever make it OFF my HDD. I only wish you could return PC

Also, any RPG'ish games for the PS3. Every time I go to the store to look at games for the PS3 I always walk away disappointed.
Pretty bad that the DS has a bunch more offerings that seem entertaining than the PS

So, I'll be in the area on my vacation starting tomorrow. My sister and I (both midwest natives) are going to make a visit to an In-N-Out. My question is: What should I order?
I know suggestions have been made in the past, but I can't find them in the comments. Thanks!

The basic plan is to have a coax + hdmi socket near the receiver. Coax goes to cable box, hdmi is ouput from receiver. Then added an hdmi only socket right behind the TV on the wall so the TV can be plugged in with no visible wires.
Not being a hardware type of guy, I probably shouldn't be installing these sockets myself right? I mean the whole cutting into the wall stuff should be done by someone who knows what they are doing? Any had experience with this?
A big motivation here is reduce, as much as humanly possible, wire clutter. My current setup looks like a big ugly bag of medusa scraggling out from behind our ugly entertainment center.

I watched this movie tonight, with some friends. It was great overall.
I recommend it if you're looking for some good laughs but dont to watch another stupid Movie Parody movie.

If you had $2,000 to spend at newegg.com to build a gaming rig, what would you get? I'm basically asking for people's advice cause I've been out of the loop for awhile in terms of computer hardware.
I prefer BFG Tech video cards and Intel CPUs. Everything else I have no idea. Anyone up to the challenge?
The only thing I don't need is a case.
