Nintendo: Core Games Coming
by Nick Breckon, Aug 26, 2008 8:07pm PDTFollowing widespread sentiment that Nintendo is neglecting its fans with a lackluster lineup of hardcore games, the company is now saying that those traditional titles are coming--just not anytime soon.
"We have never neglected our core gamers," said Nintendo in the October edition of Edge magazine according to Eurogamer. "We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years."
"These games are not ready to launch in early 2009 but are being worked on by all development teams," added the company.
After teasing a major hardcore announcement at E3, Nintendo's brief mention of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS) and a new Pikmin title did little to satisfy fans.
Nintendo has been running damage control ever since, with president Satoru Iwata going so far as to apologize for the disappointing showing.

The Wii has been out for a little over 1.5 years, in that time it's released a game each from its holy trinity (Metroid, Zelda, Mario), Super Smash Bros Brawl, Fire Emblem, numerous popular mario spin-offs including Mario Kart, etc. Lots of great, "non-casual" games. That isn't even counting all the great 3rd party stuff. Is it really expected that Nintendo release a sequel to their major IP's every year - what would bring about this crazy concept?
They always put out a new IP or two with each system (Pikmin for one on GameCube), their new IP's for this gen (WiiFit, WiiMusic, WiiSports, WiiPlay, etc) have been lumped into the casual category so far but they haven't ignored their "core" at all from what I see.
Yet, here is another rehash of the tired, and puzzling inaccurate topic.

Want hardcore games? Should have bought a console where the main attraction isn't a cute little remote you can wave around to swing an imaginary tennis racket, or a balance board where you can spin an imaginary hula hoop. Nintendo doesn't care about you anymore.

Nintendo keeps saying "core" gamers.
Here on the Shack, most of us could be described as "hardcore" gamers.
Every time this topic comes up (and it's come up several times) I see several comments from people who seem to believe that Nintendo's term "core" and our term "hardcore" are synonymous.
But I take Nintendo's term "core" to mean "people who love Nintendo and want more entries in their signature lines"
So am I right or is Nintendo really referring to "hardcore" gamers?

Heck at this point I'd be happy if they released a similar title..

There were like 1-2 games per year worth buying and even then I would have become bored of them.
"Sorry darling, I didn't get you a birthday present or wedding anniversary present this year, but I'm not neglecting you: I'll have something for you in two or three years."
