See the New PSP's Substantially Improved Screen

Earlier this week, Sony announced that it would be releasing a new PSP model with a "wider color gamut and anti-reflection technology."

Now, Japanese publication Famitsu has provided the comparison to the left, which compares the new PSP-3000 (bottom) to the PSP-2000 model (top) that arrived last fall.

Sporting a built-in microphone as well, the new PSP arrives worldwide in October.

It will arrive in North America on October 14 as part of the $199 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack bundle, which includes a copy of High Impact's platformer Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, a download code for SCE Japan's puzzler echochrome, a copy of the National Treasure 2 film, and a 1GB Memory Stick.

a) the thing they needed to fix on the psp screen really was the response time imo. (although the one i have is 1st gen jap, so this may have been addressed on the slim) I don't really find the glare is that much of a problem

b)I'll just wait until the new screen type is abundant on ebay, then replace the one in my original psp, saving myself the cash moneys and my cfw.

The image is clearly deceptive. Look at the amount of glare on each, not on the screens mind you, but on the buttons. Did Sony go through the trouble of creating anti-glare buttons? I think not. See, the old psp is more in line with the flash of the camera and will reflect more of the flash back into the camera giving it poor contrast. The newer one is displaced below the flash and more of the flash is reflected away from the camera thus improving its contrast. No, this image is meaningless. Lets see a pic of each taken in the dark, with no flash, then we'll have something to compare.

they should encourage game developers to release good games on this device and not update the hardware, i bought the psp and seriously most of the time i use it for emulators coz of the crappy games list it has

I have a first gen PSP and its screen looks nice. It looks more like the new hardware than the old hardware in the shots. Why is it my first gen PSP looks so good and like the new PSP 3000?

That's quite impressive (and I'm looking at it using a generic desktop LCD which is probably inferior to the PSP-3000's screen). Do they even make desktop LCD monitors with a color gamut like that?

Would be great if they also included the 1000 (fat) in this comparison (I was always curious if there was any improvement from the fat's screen to the slim's screen).

When do you guys thing the next-gen of handhelds will come out.. i mean it's been many many years since the introduction of the DS and the PSP.. maybe the smartphone/cell era has reduced the profitability of strictly gaming handhelds.. everyone these days wants one device to do everything
