Watch the Far Cry 2 Map Editor In Action
by Nick Breckon, Aug 20, 2008 11:27am PDTThe map editor in Ubisoft Montreal's Far Cry 2 will be supported by an online sharing and ranking network. Users will be able to rate their favorite multiplayer maps and download the more popular ones, ensuring less time wasted on junkier levels.
The below trailer offers a glimpse of the editor's level creation tools.
Far Cry 2 is planned for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. For more information on the map editor, check out our recent interview with Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking.

The gap between PC and consoles is slowly, but surely, getting smaller. User mods and maps will be the next big thing for next gen consoles IMO.

Well, that and the obvious limit on the size of the maps seen a bunch of times in this editor. What's that, 1km by 1km or so?

Had so much fun with those. I spent approx. 20 hours of my time (willingly!) making my first map, and tweaking it just so for a variety of gameplay modes (Deathmatch, Predator, CTF).
The ability to carve rivers was lacking in those editors and I'm so glad it's in FarCry 2.
I didn't see any other map making abilities featured that weren't in the previous FarCry games except that obviously everything looks way prettier and you have way more 'brushes' (objects) to play with.
I don't need to hear anything more about FarCry 2 or it's story. Instant purchase for me. :)

Of course, it helps to be playing with like-minded people, who will also carefully explore a map from the first second, instead of running to their preferred spot secure in the knowledge that the other side can't make it that far in the same amount of time at spawn ...
I'll probably just end up playing solo stealth assasination vs. AI on user-made stuff :P Still, endless botmatch variety? Win.
Looks very nice anyways, wish we had such simple level editing tools at my work...
While that's actually pretty cool, and would cut down on crappy maps, that makes it sound like I can't share a map directly with a friend. Just as an example (because I was thinking about doing this) what if I recreated some classic BF42/DC/BF2 maps, my old BF2 gaming buddies want to try them, but they're not ranked high enough by "the community" and so they can't download them?
I fully support the "no crappy maps" idea 110%, but there should still be some sort of choice available to the player. If I really want a map that "they" don't think is good enough, it should still be available to me in some way.
