Shacknews Now Hiring

88
Update: We are no longer taking applications and are in the process of combing through them. Thanks to all that applied!

Original Story: Times sure have changed in our industry, but one thing has always been a constant: people still like to write about and talk about games. We are hoping to find someone who really likes to do that, and wants to make a career of it.

That's right, we are hiring again! The position is for news and editorial work here, along with future sites. We keep things pretty flexible, and are hiring for both part time and full time positions. These are salaried positions.

Below you'll find a few lists of what we're looking for, along with a few questions to help you determine whether you're cut out for the Shacknews experience.

Requirements:

  • Self-motivated work habits. Are you asleep at your desk when Steve is golfing?
  • Critical reasoning and thinking. Can you make sense of this crazy industry?
  • Appreciable writing style. Will you add a touch of color to a bland press event?
  • Flexible work schedule. You don't like Sundays anyway, do you?
  • Willingness to travel. Middle seat, row 42 sound good?
  • Tolerance of Faylor. Do you like cats?

Big bonus points for:

  • A college degree. You know about ancient Rome, and some stuff about minorities.
  • Industry experience. You have reviewed Kane and Lynch.
  • Living near major industry hubs: Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, New York City, Dallas, the United Kingdom or Japan. Steve likes cute accents.
  • HTML/PHP knowledge. You know that an href is not a sneeze.
  • Artistic ability. Photoshopping goats comes natural to you.
  • Video production. You once crafted a YouTube video that received over 100 views.
  • A goofy picture that will fit on our staff page.

What you should send in to jobs@shacknews.com

  • A sample news item, preferably in the Shacknews style. (See Shacknews.com for examples).
  • Some kind of sample feature article. Preferably related to video games, but this is not a requirement. Just show us what you got.
  • References, to prove that someone else likes you.

This is not a pay-per-post blog job working for one of the huge corporate giants. The company is owned and managed by Steve and Maarten. You will get your hands in all kinds of projects and articles, and you will work from your home. We are looking for someone who doesn't wait for projects to come to them, but creates their own.

We are hoping to hire someone within the next few weeks. Schedules permitting.

Shack Staff stories are a collective effort with multiple staff members contributing. Many of our lists often involve entires from several editors, and our weekly Shack Chat is something we all contribute to as a group.
