Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Aug 11, 2008 5:31am PDTShackers, let's do something about this stale chatty. If you need to get on the right footing for this week, I suggest the week's Release List and some Taking Stock to be best informationally situated. Plus we've got video of the new Star Trek MMO for PC, which could be interesting in the hands of veteran MMO design house Cryptic. And did you get your zombie on? If so, you might be one of our fifteen winners!

I currently own a Casio 5mp point and shoot that takes pretty crappy pictures. Wanting to upgrade.
- I'd really like to learn photography but I'm a complete novice, so I need something that is easy to use at first and that I can "grow" with.
- Likewise my wife will never learn any complex features, so there would need to be an auto or semi-intelligent mode she can just flip to and take a snap.
- Not looking to spend a huge amount of money up front, if goin
I know DSLR will be the most versatile and have the best image quality, but I'm wondering if they would be too much a pain to work with.
Anyway I just started looking around last week and so far I'm looking more closely at the Canon Rebel XS/XSi, Pentax K200D, or Panasonic DMC-FZ18 (non-SLR).
What questions should I be asking to know what would be the best camera for us?

Lately whenever confronted with a meaty, epic game like The Witcher or GTAIV or Mass Effect the idea of sitting down for three hours to play really appeals to me, but more often than not I'll instead load up something simple and quick like Geometry Wars 2, TF2, or some other pocket-sized game.
I hate it! I used to make fun of gamers who were too "tired" or "lazy" to learn the intricacies of a new game, but it's happening to me. And it sucks.

It's on how to go from being an Intermediate player to Advanced/Pro and it applies to TF2, Quake and Counter-Strike. I decided there were too many guides for newcomers and absolutely nothing geared towards the hardcore players that play every day.
I figured I should put my 12 years of fps gaming (wow, it's really been a long time...) to good use. Now, at least, I have something to show for it ! http://www.fraggingfundamentals.com

Does anyone regret buying an iPhone? Would they still recommend it?
It costs 34,000 yen ($313) for the handset (paid over 24 months), plus 7280 yen ($66) a month with flat rate data.
Is it worth it? The battery life and increased monthly bill are my main concerns...

I remember long ago, there were some PS2 ones I was interested in, but didn't get a PS2 until late last year, so I don't remember what they were. Any suggestions for RPGs?

This is quite possibly the most genius puzzle game ever made. I will have to finish it before I make the final Braid vs Portal judgement (although portal already wins for overall presentation, the pure puzzle element might go to Braid)
I completed puzzles 2 and 3, am missing one from 4 and 5, and haven't started 6 yet.

It's sad to see a company that is so focused on gaming excellence and stability fall apart in its web development.

Mini-review:
Despite being technically superior, this sequel simply didn't grab me as much as the first game. I enjoyed the original TLJ because of April's character. She was smart, funny, and had lots of witty dialogue. The other characters in the game were also interesting and you could empathize with all of them.
In Dreamfall, April Ryan is hardly in it and she's also become some emo chick who just wants to die. Ok, well that kind of goes against what the ending of TLJ seemed to imply but I'll let it slide.
Zoe is the new main character and she isn't really funny or interesting. She whines a lot and really doesn't garner much empathy. Her 'romance' with whatever that guy's name is was very forced. Somehow they fell in love in about 5 minutes and after escaping from the WaitCorp facility they pour their hearts out to each other. Sure...
Tyan (or however you spell it), went from being the #1 Prophet to wayward and confused in about 10 minutes of game time. For a character-driven game they sure don't show us a lot of the character development. He didn't even feel like a necessary part of the game. Maybe he'll have a larger role in the sequel.
Sometimes the dialogue drones on and on. They need to learn to keep the conversations more concise and believable. That said, the voice acting was generally top notch. Well done on that part.
The combat and stealth were a joke. Not sure why they put them in the game, but I suppose it was because they had so little gameplay as it is. The puzzles were pretty easy and the only difficult ones were because of the borked targeting/selecting mechanism.
In TLJ, you could examine have April describe hundreds of different objects. In Dreamfall, the number is greatly reduced, and many of them can be missed because of the aforementioned targeting system.
It probably seems like I'm tearing this game apart, but I did enjoy it overall. I only regret that it could've been so much better. But I do realize that It had impossible standards to live up to as TLJ was, in my opinion, one of the top adventure games of its time.

1 x 1GB GSkill PC2-5300 Laptop RAM (CL5-5-5-15)
1 x 256MB Apple Stock PC2-5300 Laptop RAM (CL5)
1 x XBOX360 Wireless adapter (Official)
I recently upgraded my MBP's RAM to 4GB. Pulled out 2 1GB chips. Then used one of those to updated my wife's MacBook to 2GB. Now I got a gig and quarter up for grabs.
I also, got a Airport Express a while back for hot music streaming action. And it turns out I can plug my 360 into it's ethernet port to get online, and the airport express will pretty much always be next to my xbox, so my old wireless adapter up for grabs too.
The hard part will be deciding who to give them too. So be sure to include some qualifying material with your request, whatever that means to you.

Now, I didn't write it, so I'm not sure exactly what is going on underneath yet. However, I'm pretty surprised that a thread is dying, magically, with no expception being thrown. I have verified that part. Is there anything special about java threading I need to know to make sure the thread stays alive? I don't suppose somehow the system is getting confused since the thread is idle for a few hours and somehow magically cleaning it up?
Is a watchdog thread a potential solution?

I did a quick check on a Wii Fit and it still seems hard to find and most people on Amazon/Ebay/Craigslist are jacking up the price, I refuse to pay over msrp for anything and will just wait until I can find it at that price.. (I mean physical products not items like sports/concert tickets)

So my wife suggests a webcam. This is a realy good idea, I dunno why I didn't think of it.
Can anyone recommend a cheap webcam and an easy to set up service so we can do the face to face thing?

Our company box is getting tore the fuck up by spam. I'm talking on average of 500 pieces a day, across about 150 domains? Obviously some of it is our own fault due to the fact that a good 90% of our sites are adult related. But even on separate IP sites that I provide hosting for, are getting the same thing.
Now we have Spam assassin running on all the domains, and I've got the filter set to about as strict as it can be without completely screwing us from getting legitimate emails, but even then, our client contact email gets 200+ pieces a day. Even a private address I have on the box, via a domain that isnt even built gets hit with about 50 a day that don't get tagged.
So my question is this, is there another software I should try? Or should I just sit down one night and try blacklisting ip/domains that we are getting spammed by?

This is Jake in the PoP movie attire. He actually looks pretty close to the game character, though with more body hair.

Game day, yay. Lampshades had a rough one last time, but today shouldn't be too bad.
Friendly matches have been added, cool. Unfortunately only the owner can schedule them, so might be awhile until the Lampshades can do one.
We have too many inactives. :( People are gaining levels and not assigning skill points, and some are getting tired from not training on relaxed. Come on people, all you have to do is log on every couple days.
