Crackdown 2 Still Possible, Says Developer

12
Currently in development on the crime MMO All Points Bulletin (PC, 360), Realtime Worlds studio manager Colin MacDonald said that there may yet be hope for a sequel to its super-powered open world title Crackdown (360) sometime in the future.

"I don't think the door's closed [on a Crackdown sequel]," MacDonald told Videogaming247. "Obviously, right now we're tied up with APB and everything else, but hopefully in the future we'll have the resource and something can be worked out with Microsoft."

After the completion of Crackdown, the studio moved directly into the development of APB, which is said to dynamically pit cops against criminals in a vast online city. MacDonald described the decision against immediately beginning development of a Crackdown sequel as "a horrible, horrible decision that we still dwell on."

"We would have loved to have seen it. We poured five years of our lives into that game," he explained. "But at the end of the day we're a company that has to do what's best for the company. We've got to stay in business. And the numbers just didn't add up. We're not in the business of doing things because we'd like to, if we can't guarantee that it makes sense for the company."

All Points Bulletin is scheduled for release in 2009, with a public beta of the MMO expected in the months leading up to its debut.

Yeah I don't really get it. Was Crackdown not successful? It seems a new MMO franchise would be a bigger risk.

Anyway Crackdown 2 yes pls in my mouth I'll swallow.

Agreed. MMOs to my knowledge haven't proved successful on the console and are very difficult to get a foothold on PC. If free to play, maybe. Cops and robbers in an MMO world just isn't getting my blood pumping. Also agreed that Crackdown 2 can't come soon enough. Not happy they can't expand to work that project as well.

My guess is that MS didn't have a ton of confidence in Crackdown and weren't going to start paying Realtime Worlds to start developing the sequel until the numbers were in for the first one. Meanwhile, RW couldn't just sit there idle, so they secured funding to produce APB and started on that. When MS finally realized they had a hit on their hands RW had already committed to their next project.
