Dead Space Written by Iron Man's Warren Ellis

by Chris Faylor, Aug 07, 2008 8:45am PDT

Prolific comic book author Warren Ellis, pictured left, has revealed that he played a significant role in writing EA Redwood Shore's upcoming sci-fi survival horror title Dead Space.

"I got released from an NDA the other day, so I can finally say that I wrote a bunch of the groundwork, backstory and structure on the forthcoming EA videogame Dead Space," Ellis stated in a recent newsletter. "I believe there was at least one other writer on the

project, but I'm sure there's some of me in there

somewhere."

Dead Space, due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late October, puts players in the role of Isaac, an engineer that "awakes to a living nightmare" when he arrives at a deep space mining station full of murderous mutated monsters and futuristic technology.

Perhaps best known as the author of comic books such as Transmetropolitian and Iron Man: Extremis, Ellis' broad library of work includes the Castlevania animated flick Castlevania: Dracula's Curse, Rage Games' 2001 game Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising (PC), the novel Crooked Little Vein, and a forthcoming television show.

  • For people who are interested in Dead Space, check out "Hollow Moon", a fascinating mod for UT2k3. Check out this article, it gives a great overview of what's to like about the mod: http://www.moddb.com/features/december-motm-hollow-moon

Dead Space appears to have some similarities, including the horror-in-space genre and the silence of space. In fact, Hollow Moon has no sound effects at all, just an eerie and often misleading (in a tension-filled and cool way) musical soundtrack. Oh, and the entire game is done in black and white! The mod was never finished and appears to be dead, development-wise, but a few releases were made and the game is totally playable. Hollow Moon might just give you a taste of what appears to be a real unique game.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with the Hollow Moon guys or a shill of any kind. It's just that there's nothing else like it, and Dead Space fills me with hope that I might get a new, complete game that channels much of what made Hollow Moon so damn unique.
